-Picturesofpeopleorplacesforstudentstodescribe

AnticipatorySet(Engagement):

Teacherwillshowthestudentspicturesofdifferentpeople,places,andthingsandaskthemtodescribewhattheyseeusingadjectives.Theteacherwillwritetheadjectivesontheboard.

InstructionalSequence(Exploration):

1.Introducethelessonbytellingthestudentsthattheywillbelearninghowtowriteadescriptiveparagraphaboutapersonorplacetheyadmire.

2.Useathink-aloudstrategytomodelforthestudentshowtowriteadescriptiveparagraph.Forexample,theteachercouldchooseafamouspersonorplaceandwriteaparagraphaboutitwhilethinkingaloud.Thiscouldhelpthestudentsunderstandhowdetailsmaketheparagraphmoredescriptive.

3.Distributethehandoutstostudentsandinstructthemtofilloutthetemplatewithdetailsandadjectivesaboutapersonorplacetheyadmire.Remindstudentstousethepasttensetotalkaboutapasteventrelatedtothepersonorplacetheyarewritingabout.

4.Givestudentstimetocompletetheirparagraphsandthensharethemwiththeirpeers.

GuidedPractice:

Oncestudentshavefinishedwritingtheirparagraphs,theteacherwillchooseafewtosharewiththeclass.Theclasswillthenworktogethertoidentifytheadjectivesandpasttenseverbsintheparagraphs.

IndependentPractice:

Ashomework,studentswillbeaskedtointerviewafamilymemberorfriendaboutapasteventandwriteadescriptiveparagraphaboutitusingthetemplateprovidedinclass.

Closure:

Remindstudentsthatadjectivesandpasttenseverbsareimportantinmakingaparagraphdescriptive.Encouragethemtocontinueusingtheseskillsintheirwriting.

Warm-upactivity:

Havestudentsread"TheGivingTree"byShelSilverstein.Discussthedifferentcharactertraitsoftheboyandthetree.Havestudentsidentifytheadjectivesusedtodescribeeachcharacter.Reinforcetheconceptofadjectivesandhowtheyareusedtodescribenouns.

Directinstruction:

Reviewpasttenseverbswiththeclass.Discussthedifferentformsofpasttenseverbsandhowtheyareusedinsentences.Modelseveralsentencesusingpasttenseverbsandhavestudentsidentifytheverbsandtense.
