Introduction
Tillageisatraditionalagriculturalpracticeusedtopreparesoilforplantingandtofacilitatecropgrowth.Itinvolvesavarietyofmechanicalandculturaloperationssuchasploughing,harrowing,ridging,disking,harrowingandrolling.Tillageisanimportantpartofsoilmanagementandcropproductionandplaysakeyroleinsustainableagriculture.Themainobjectivesoftillagearetoreducesoilcompaction,improvewaterinfiltrationandconservesoilstructure,andreducewindorwatererosion.
Varioustillagetoolshavebeendevelopedovercenturiesofefforttoimprovecropproductionandsoilfertility.Traditionaltillagepracticesarelaborintensiveandtimeconsumingandcanoftenleadtosoildegradationthrougherosionandcompaction.Overtime,newtechnologiesandpracticeshavebeenimplementedtoreducelabor,increaseefficiencyandreduceenvironmentalimpactsuchaschemicalusageandsoilloss.Theseincludeconservation-tillage,no-till,zero-till,vertical-tillageandrobotictillers.
ApplicationofTillageTechnologyinWheat
Wheatisoneofthemostimportantfoodcropsintheworldandtillagetechnologyhasbeenusedextensivelyinwheatproductionforcenturies.Tillagetechnologiesimprovecropyieldsbyincreasingsoilaeration,increasingwaterinfiltrationandreducingsoilcompaction.Additionally,tillagepracticescanreduceweedinfestation,facilitatenutrientabsorptionandimproveseedgermination.Differenttillagesystemshavedifferentadvantagesanddisadvantagesdependingonthesoiltypeandlocalweatherconditions.
Inconventionaltillagesystems,plowingisoneofthecommonpractices.Plowingturnsoversoil,buryingresiduesandweeds,whichincreasestheavailabilityofnitrogentoplants,reducessoilcompactionandenhanceswaterinfiltration.However,itcanalsocausesoilerosionandwaterrunoffduetotheremovalofsurfaceresidue.Harrowingisanothercommonpracticeusedinconventionaltillagesystems.Itbreaksuplargeclods,reducingsoilcompactionandpromotingwaterinfiltration,butcanalsocausewinderosionandsoilloss.
Ridge-tillsystemsarebecomingincreasinglypopularastheyreducesoilerosionandwaterrunoffwhilestillimprovingsoilaerationandwaterinfiltration.Inthissystem,cropresiduesareleftonthesurfaceandfurrowsorridgesarecreatedtohelpaidwaterinfiltration.Zero-tillsystemsaresimilartoridge-tillsystems,butdonotrequireanysoilmanipulationandsoilcoverismaintainedatalltimes.Thissystemreducestheneedfortillagemachines,savesenergyandrarelycausessoilerosion.

RecentAdvancesinAutomatedTillageTechnology
Overthepastfewyears,therehavebeenrapidadvancesinautomatedtillagetechnologies.Robotically-controlledtillersarenowbeingusedtoreplacemanuallaborinlargescalefarmingoperations.Robotscanwork24hoursaday,allowingthefarmertoreducelaborcosts,increaseefficiencyandreducetheneedforchemicalsandfertilizer.Furthermore,robotscanbeprogrammedtoperfectlymatchtheuser’sneedsandareprogrammedtoperformpreciseoperations,resultinginimprovedyieldsandhigherqualitycropproduction.
