moved

by

the

main

character

Marguerite

Gautier.

Camille

orTheLadyoftheCamellias

by

Alexandre

Dumas,

fils,

isthe

story

ofMarguerite

Gautier,

a

youngcourtesan,orkeptwoman,inParisinthemid1800s,

and

how

she

falls

in

lovewith

ayoung

man,

Armand

Duval,

andthentriestoescapefromher

questionable

past.

Unfortunately,

it

comes

backto

haunt

herandsheendsup

returningtothatlifeanddiespainfullyandalone,butwiththe

knowledgethatshewasanoblewomanatheart.WhenIfirst

begantoreadthebook,IdidnotcareforMargueriteorher

attitude

orlifestyle,

but

as

Igot

further

into

the

narrative,

I

realizedthathersaucyattitudewasafronttocoverthelonely

womanthatshereallywas.Shefeltused,abusedandunloved,

untilthegentleArmandDuvalcameintoherlifeandshowed

herthathelovedherasapersonandnotforwhatshecould

doforhim.ItmusthavetakengreatcourageforMargueriteto

leavethelifeshehadlivedforsolong,knowingallalongthat

itwas

probably

too

good

to

be

true

and

would

notlast

indefinitely.

Andit

also

showed

that

Marguerite

really

loved

ArmandDuvalforshecouldevenchangeherselfforhim.

However,happinessdidntlastforlong.WhenM.Duval,

Armand

sfather,

came

to

her,

pleading

for

her

to

leave

Armand

to

saveboth

Armand

s

reputation

and

that

of

his

youngerinnocentsister,Margueritesawawaytobecomepure

ofheart,ifnotinbody.Shefeltthatitwasherduty,because

shelovedArmandsomuch,todothiseventhoughitmeant

givingupherownhappinessandhurtingArmandtemporarily.

Shereluctantlyreturnedtoherformerlife,knowingthatsome

dayArmand

would

forgive

her.Sadly,she

died

in

debt

and

basicallyalone,exceptforheronefemalefriend,JulieDuprat,

whohelpedherduringherillness.Shehadherjournalsentto

Armand

afterher

death,

explaining

whyshe

had

made

the

choices

she

had.

I

think

Dumas

slast

few

lines

about

Margueritebeingtheexception,nottherulewerequitetrue,

andIalsoagreedwithhisviewthatwhileherlifestylecould

notbecondoned,weasasocietyassumethatallofthesetype

ofwomenarecoldandheartless,whilethismaynotalwaysbe

thecase.Apersoncanmakethewrongchoicesinlifewhen

theyareyoung,andtrytoredeemthemselves,butsometimes

pastsituationsprevent

themfromchangingtheir

lives,

even

though

they

desperately

wish

to

do

so.This

applies

to

both

men

andwomen

in

many

different

types

of

circumstances:

involvement

incrime;drugoralcohol

abuse;gambling;

prostitution;

financial

problems;

poor

marriage

choices;

etc.

Andthisisthefact,whichexistsinthewholesociety.

As

far

as

the

other

characters

in

the

book,

I

think

Margueritewasrightinsayingthatnoonetrulycaredabout

her,butonlywantedsomethingfromher,theonlyexceptions

being

Armand

and

Julie

Duprat.

Ofcourse,the

ComtedeG.

neededtowakeupandsmellthecoffeeandrealizethatshe

could

never

replace

his

dead

daughter.

If

he

truly

cared,he

couldhavehelpedherleaveherlifestylewithoutkeepingher

himself.Andlastly,Prudencewasablood-suckingleechwho

usedMargueritealmostworsethanthemen.Ialsothinkshe

wasjealous

ofthefactthatMarguerite

had

so

much

more

couragethanherselfandsomeonetrulylovedher.

Lastmorning,whentidingmybookshelf,Itookthisbook

outoftheshelf,andadriedflowerflewawayfromthebook.It

waspaleblue,

very

transparent,

with

thin
