weenskillsandjobshadbeengreatlyreduced.WhattookceafterWorldWar[[wasnottherevivalofa1920seconomy,withitssmallfarmingunits,urbanmanufacturing,andpluralityoflaborers.Instead,the1950ssawthecreationofanewsuburbaneconomy,withapluralityofwhite-collarworkers.Withanexpandedtransportationandcommunicationsinfrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施),businessesneededephoneoperators,shipclerksandsimilaroccupations.Ifyoucouldread,followsimpleinstructions,andsettleintoaroutine,youcouldfindajobinthepost-wareconomy.Thetrendawayfrommanuallaborhas.Evenwithinthemanufacturingsector,theshareofproductionandnon-supervisoryworkersinmanufacturingemploymentwentfromover85%justafterWorldWar[Itolessthan70%inmorerecentyears.Toputthisanotherway,theproportionofwhite-collarworkinmanufacturinghasdoubledoverthepast50years.Onthefactoryflooritself,workhaselessphysicallydemanding.Instead,itrequiresmorecognitiveskillsandtheabilitytounderstandandcarryoutwell-definedprocedures.Asnotedearlier,theproportionofclericalworkersintheeconomypeakedin1980.Bythatdate,computersandadvancedcommunicationsequipmenthadalreadybeguntoaffectephoneoperationsandbanking.Theriseofthealcomputer,andtheInternethaswidenedtheimpactofthesetoincludenearlyeverybusinessandindustry.Theeconomytodaydiffersfromthatofagenerationago.Mortgageandconsumerloanunderwriters(風(fēng)險評估人)havebeenrecedbycreditscoring.Recordstoreshavebeenrecedbymusicdownloads.Bookstoresareclosing,whilesalesofbooksonelectronicreadershaveincreased.Dataentryhasbeenmovedoffshore.Routinecustomersupportalsohasbeenoutsourced(外包)overseas.Thesetrendsservetolimittheavailabilityofwell-definedjobs.Ifajobcanbecharacterizedbyaprécisesetofinstructions,thenthatjobisacandidatetobeautomatedoroutsourcedtomodestlyeducatedworkersindevelocountries.TheresultiswhatDavidAutorcallsthepolarizationoftheAmericanjobmarket.UsingthelatestCensusBureaudata,MatthewSlaughterfoundthatfrom2000to2010therealearningsofcollegegraduates(withnoadvanceddegree)fellbymoreinpercentagetermsthantheearningsofhighschoolgraduates.Infact,overthisperiodtheonlyeducationcategorytoshowanincreaseinearningswasthosewithadvanceddegrees.Theoutlookformid-skilljobswouldnotappeartobebright.Communicationstechnologyandcomputerinligencecontinuetoimprove,puttingmoreoccupationsatrisk.Forexample,manypeopleearnalivingasdrivers,includingtrucksandtaxicabs.However,theageofdriverlessvehiclesappearstobemovingcloserAnotherexampleisinthefieldofeducation.Inthefallof2011,anexperimentwithanonlinecourseinartificialinligenceconductedbytwoStanfordprofessorsdrewtensofthousandsofregistrantsThisincreasesthestudent-teacherratiobyafactorofclosetoathousand.Imaginethenumberofteachingjobsthatmightbeeliminatedifthiscouldbedoneformath,economics,chemistry,andsoon.It'simportanttobearinmindthatwhenweofferastructuralinterpretationofunemployment,a"lossofjobs"meansanincreaseinproductivity.Traditionally,economistshavearguedthatproductivityincreasesareagoodthing,eventhoughtheymaycauseunemploymentforsomeworkersintheshortrun.Inthelongrun,theeconomydoesnotrunout.ofjobs.Rather,newjobsemergeasoldjobsdisappear.Thestorywelisthataveragewell-beingrises,andthemorepeopleareabletoadapt,themorewidespreadtheEvenfactoryfloorworktodayhas
