thenorthofhisempire.HewantedtokeepthetribesofHunsandTartars

differentkingsofChina,buttheFirstEmperor,nowthatheruledallChina,

decidedtocompletethewall.Hedecidedtomakeitrunrightacrossfrom

Tibettothesea,adistanceofover1500miles.Ittooksevenyearsto

build.

TheGreatWallranacrosswild,steep,mountainouscountry,overthe

mountainsanddownthevalleys.Northandwestofittherewereonlywild

mountainsanddeserts,andsouthandeastthereweretherichYellowRiver

plains.Itwasbuilthigherthanadouble-deckerbus.Inmostplacesitwas

wideenoughforeightmentomarchsidebysidealongthetop.Itwasbuilt

ofstonesandclay.Therewerehugeblocksofstonesonthesides,andon

thetopthereweremorestones.Carscouldtravelalongthetop.

Abouteverytwohundredyardsthereweretall,strongtowerswhere

soldierscouldkeepwatchfortheenemy,andwheretheycouldlightfires

tosignaltoeachother.Therewerealwayssoldiersinsidethesetowers,

winterandsummer,keepingguardagainstattacksfromtheHuns.Therewere

afewwell-guardedgatewayswithhugewoodengates,strengthenedwithiron

nails.TheseconnectedthemainroadsofChinatootherroadsthroughthe

mountainsandacrossthedesert.

TheGreatWallhasoftenbeenrebuiltthroughthecenturies,andmuch

ofitisstillstandingtoday.Visitorscanstillseeitrunninglikeasnake

acrossthecountryandcanstillwalkalongthetop.Muchofthetraffic

whichpassesthroughtheancientgatewayshasnotchangedmuch.Buttoday,

aswellashorsesandcartstherearemotorcarsandtrucks.

Tobuildsuchanenormouswallacrosssuchwildandmountainouscountry

withoutanymoderntractorsorotherheavymachineswasverydifficult.Al1

theEmperorsbuilderswerethousandsofmen,oftenprisonersofwar.They

liftedtheearthinbucketsanddraggedthestonesinteamswithropesover

theirshoulders.Theyworkedinsuchwildanddistantplacesthatitwas

difficulttosupplythemwithenoughfoodortomakepropersheltersinwhich

theycouldsleep.Thousandsofworkersdiedandwereburiedintheclay

insidethewall.ThepeoplehatedtheEmperorforhiscrueltybuthemade

themfinishthewall.Manypeoplewereseizedandforcedtoworkonthewall

farawayfromtheirhomes.Manyofthemnevercameback.

Superstitiouspeoplewhobe]ievedinmagicusedtosaythattheEmperor

hadriddenacrossthemountainsonmagichorses.Thewallappearedunder

himashewentalong.Whereverthehorsestampeditsfoot,awatch-tower

appeared.Butthewallwasnotmadebymagic.Itwasmadebytheworkand

livesofthousandsofmen.

2.TheYellowCraneTower

OnMay20,1985thenewly-rebuiltYellowCraneTower(HuangheTower)was

completedandopenedtothepublic.

Therebuildingofthetowertookfouryearsandcost15millionyuan.

Thisfive-storeyedbuildingstandsonthetopoftheSnakeHill(Mount

She)bytheChangjiangRiverinHubeiProvince.Itis51.4metreshigh.In

thehallsofthefirstfourstoreystherearemanypictures,portraitsand

wall-paintings.Theyareaboutfairytales,Chinesehistoryandthehistory

ofthetower.

ThereisalegendthatlonglongagoanoldmannamedWangZhianrode

drewayellowcraneonthewallwithapieceoforangeskin.Theyellowcrane

flewdownoffthewallanddancedhappilyimmediatelyafterthepeople

adrink.MrsXingotricherandricher.Soshedecidedtobuildatowerin

memoryofthecrane.ItwasnamedtheYellowCraneTower.

Infact,theYellowCraneTowerwasfirstbuiltmorethan1600years

ago.ThatisintheearlyyearsoftheThree-KingdomPeriod.Itstoodon

thesouthbankoftheChangjiangRiverinWuchang.

TnOctober1981,thegovernmentdecidedtorebuiIdtheYellowCrane

Tower,andnowonthetopoftheSnakeHil]standsanewmagnificent

five-storeyedYellowCraneTower,overlookingthebeautifulrivercityof

Wuban.
