Theislandershereknowaboutearthquakes.Haitiliesinanareawheretherearefrequenttremorsandalsotropicalstorms.ButlastweeksearthquakeregisteredsevenontheRichterscale—almostashighasthescalecango.Itwasthebiggestfor200years.IthappenedeightkilometersbeneaththeEarthscrust—thatsquiteclosetothesurface,sothetremorswerereallystrong.
Therewerealsolotsofaftershocks—tremorsthathappenafterthemainearthquake.Thoseaftershockscanalsocausedamageasbuildingscollapsefurtherandtrappeoplewhomighthavesurvivedthefirstdisaster.
TheBritishgovernmenthaspromised20millionpoundsofaidtohelpHaiti,andmanypeoplehavealsomadedonations.
Nowtheconcernistopreventdiseasehittingareaswithoutcleanwaterorenoughmedicalhelp.
