Adroughtisalong-lastingweatherpatternconsistingofdryconditionswithverylittleornoprecipitation.Duringthisperiod,foodandwatersuppliescanrunlow,andotherconditions,suchasfamine,canoccur.Droughtscanlastforseveralyearsandareparticularlydamaginginareasinwhichtheresidentsdependonagricultureforsurvival.

Afloodfollowstoomuchrainorwaterinalocation,andcouldbetheresultofmanydifferentconditions.Floodscanbecausedbyheavyrainfallfromastorm,includingthunderstorms,rapidmeltingoflargeamountsofsnow,orriverswhichswellfromtoomuchprecipitationupstream,causingwidespreaddamagetoareasdownstream.Anotherpossiblecauseoffloodsistheburstingofman-madedams.

Haitiisapoorcountrywithfewemergencyservicestohelp.Theislandershadtousetheirbarehandstosearchfortheirfamilies.TheywaitedforteamsfromoverseascountrieslikeBritainandtheUnitedStatestobringequipmentandmanpowertohelprescueanysurvivorstheycouldfind.

Itsfearedthatmorethan100,000peoplehavedied.Oneschoolfriendliesinjuredonthepavement.Anothervoiceshersorrow.Thehistoriccathedralwasbadlydamaged;andatthepresidentialpalace,theroofcollapsed.

Theislandershereknowaboutearthquakes.Haitiliesinanareawheretherearefrequenttremorsandalsotropicalstorms.ButlastweeksearthquakeregisteredsevenontheRichterscale—almostashighasthescalecango.Itwasthebiggestfor200years.IthappenedeightkilometersbeneaththeEarthscrust—thatsquiteclosetothesurface,sothetremorswerereallystrong.

Therewerealsolotsofaftershocks—tremorsthathappenafterthemainearthquake.Thoseaftershockscanalsocausedamageasbuildingscollapsefurtherandtrappeoplewhomighthavesurvivedthefirstdisaster.

TheBritishgovernmenthaspromised20millionpoundsofaidtohelpHaiti,andmanypeoplehavealsomadedonations.

Nowtheconcernistopreventdiseasehittingareaswithoutcleanwaterorenoughmedicalhelp.
