TsinghuaUniversity’scustomofadvocatingsportsandexcellentsportstraditionareformed,continuedanddevelopedunderthestressingandpromotionoftheoperatorsandeventheirownoperation.TheyhavebeendeeplyrootedintheTsinghua’sgreatculturalconceptsofmorethan90years.

CurrentlyTeachingandResearchDivisionofPhysicalCultureiswellstaffedwith59teachers,inwhichthereare11professors,33associateprofessors,5Ph.D.supervisorsand5master'ssupervisors.Amongtheteachers,twelvehavedoctor'sdegree,andtherearetwentymastersandfivepeoplewithdualdegrees,27undergraduatesand6internationalreferees.Furthermore,wehaveemployed5domesticwell-knowncoaches.InTsinghuaUniversityatpresent,PErequiredcoursesareofferedtofourgradesofundergraduatesandPEelectivecoursesareofferedtograduates;therearemorethan50PEcourses.CurrentlyTeachingandResearchDivisionofPhysicalCulturehassetupSportsandHealthResearchCenter,Lab.ofExerciseSciences&SportsMedicine,KeyResearchBaseforSportsandSocialScienceofGeneralAdministrationofSportsofChina.

Atpresent,TsinghuaUniversityhas36representativeteamsin26sports,includingT&Fteam,rowingteam,divingteam,shootingteam,basketballteam,fencingteamandotherteamswithmorethan500studentathletes.Theyhaveachievedexcellentresultsinnationalandeventheworldcompetitions.

ThebasicconceptofTsinghuasportsiseducationforemost,forallandpursuingexcellence.SportsworkofTsinghuawasjuststartedinsuchanatmosphere.Ithasnotonlyinheritedthegoodtraditionofsportsaccumulatedandcontinuedfordecadesbutalsointegratedwithnewideas,viewpointsandmethodswithsocialdevelopment,changesofpeople’sthinkingandvalues.Itmakestheconceptof“fightingtoworkatleast50yearshealthilyforthemotherland”fillingTsinghuaParkbecomeTsinghuapeople’sconsciousphysicalexercise.ItmakessportsinTsinghuaUniversitybecomenotonlyanimportantcomponentofuniversityeducationbutalsoanimportantsupportforceofthenationandsociety.

History

TsinghuaSporthasalonghistorywithasolidfoundation.Asthewindowofpromotingsports,improvingandstrengthenthehealthofstudents,DivisionofPhysicalEducationhasbeeninvolvedinthecenturytorrentofTsinghuaUniversity.

In1912,aswiththepromotionofthephysicaleducationconception“Ethic,Intelligence,Physicalquality”broughtbyPresidentZhouYichun,theDivisionofPhysicalEducationwasformallyfounded.“Thereasonwhyacountryisweakduetoitsweakpeople,whichistheresultofimpopularizationofphysicaleducation”.SincetheDivisionofPhysicalEducationwasfounded,ithasadvocatedthatthepurposefordoingsportsistomakethenationstronger.Therefore,highqualityteachingresourceisthepreciouswealthfortherealizationofsettinggoalsandguaranteeforthedevelopmentofthedivision.CelebritiessuchasShoemaker,Brace,JohnMo,LiJianqiu,XiaXiang,etc.havelentstrongfoundationforthebasisofDivision.

Establishingreasonablecoursesystemsanddoingappropriatesportsisthekeytoimprovingstudents’healthandbodyquality.WiththegradualdevelopmentofDivisionofPhysicalEducationatTsinghuaUniversity,Divisiongraduallyputforwardsomemeasuressuchas“CoercivePhysicalEducation”，“FiveItemTests”,“SettingPhysicalEducationClasses”,etc.inordertosetupcomprehensiverequirementsforstudents.EspeciallyduringtheEraofNationalSouthwestAssociatedUniversity,thesmokeofWardidnotpreventDivisionfromdevelopingandimprovingPhysicalEducation,Brandneweventsas“BullFight”,“FlagGetting”broughtaboutapieceofspiritualsustenanceforstudentswhohadbeensufferingthewar.

“Screamingonce,watchingTsinghuawithsword”,afterthewar,“healthy”hadbeenthegoalpeoplewerechasingfor.Intheyear1957,PresidentJiangNanxiangputforwardthat“Workingforourmotherlandhealthilyforatleast50years”,thisquotehadnotonlybecomethegoalforTsinghuastudents,butalsotheexplanationofcultivatingstudentswiththethoughtof“Improvingonthebasisofpopularization,

popularizingundertheconductofimprovement”.Therefore,onthecommandofteachersasJohnMo,XiaXiang,WangYingjie,WangWeiping,YangDaochong,etc.,activelypromoting“Working&DefendingtheNationSystem”and“FiveExcercisesStandards”andatthesametimeorganized38representativeteamwhichhadasmanyas450people,withthebiggestscaleandlargestnumberofeventsamongalltheuniversitiesatthattimeaccordingtotherequirementof“Amateurcatchestheprofessional”,whichhadlargelyprosperedthesportsactivitiesonandoffcampusaswellaspromotedthepopularizationofsportsactivitiesamongthestudents.

SincethestartofReformandOpeningupPolicy,thetraditionofTsinghuaUniversityhadbeenfurthercarriedforward,themajorityofstudentshadgraduallyformedthehabitofkeepingexercising.Sportswasgiventheconnotationofnewera.Atthismoment,DivisionofPysicalEducationkeptthesenseofeducationof“Educatingpeoplefirstwhenemphasizingonbothbodyandmorality”andadvocatedthecombinationofeducationandsports,broughtthesportsintothetrackofthedevelopmentofschoolsubjects,whichhencewentintoaneweraofdevelopment.

ThebasictheoryofTsinghuaSportsis“Educatingfirst,facingallthepeople,inpursuitofexcellence”.However,cultivatingrealtalentsforthenationmustmaintainthepolicyofcomprehensivedevelopmentof“Ethic,Intelligence,physical,beauty,labor”shouldfocusonthecomprehensivebuildingandHoningfortheyouth’shealthypersonality.Thus,Divisionactivelycarriedonsportactivitiesforpeople,emphasizedontheoveralldevelopmentofstudents,Sportseventsas“JohnMoCup”StudentsTrackandFieldSportsMeeting,FreshmanSportsMeetingandBeijingInternationalMarathonCompetitionscomposedthesystemofcompetitionsforpeoplealltheyearround.Besides,inordertoimplementnationalpoliciesof“NationalFitnessProgram”and”O(jiān)lympicsGloryPlan”,DivisionofPhysicalEducationtriedtoestablishhighlevelstudentethleteteaminOctober,1999,onthebasisofcombiningdetailednationalsituationandwidelyreferringtotheexperienceofsuccessofthosesportsdevelopedcountries,whichbeganameanofnationtrainingstudentathletesandcontributedforthepopularizationofathleticsportsamongChineseuniversitystudents.Sofar,thereare36representativeteamsof26sportsevents,includingTrack

andFieldTeam,RowingTeam,DivingTeam,ShootingTeam,BasketballTeam,FencingTeam,FootballTeam,VolleyballTeam,SwimmingTeam,TableTennisTeam,etc.,therearemorethan500studentathletes,whohavemadeexcellentresultsamongnationalandInternationalcompetitions.During2022BeijingOlympics,HuKaicooperatedwithteammatesin4*100RelayRaceandranked4thPlaceinthegroupinfirstround,theysuccessfullywentintothefinalgamewiththeresultof39’’13,whichcreatedanewhistoryinChineseTrackandFieldevent.

Sincethemid-90s,withthestandardizationofphysicaleducation,Scientificizationofsportsmanagement,systemizationofgroupactivities,internationalizationandpopularizationofathleticsports,thepositionofthefunctionofmoderncollegesportsischanging.Therefore,DivisionofPEatTsinghuamake"Enteringthemainstream,Uniqueness,Highstartingpoint,Openness"astheguidelines,putPEintotheacademictrackofconstruction.Inthefirsttermof"985"project,500millionRMBwereinvestedforPhysicalEducationbuilding,italsoestablished"SportsandHealthScienceResearchCenterofTsinghuaUniversity"in1996andappliedonepointofMaster’sDegreeof"PhysicalEducationandTrainingDegree”andtwopointsofMaster’sDegreeofthe"HumanKinesiology"and"Sporthumanitiesandsociology"andonepointofMaster'sDegree"PhysicalEducationandTraining".In2022,anewpost-doctoralresearchstationwasnewlyadded.Uptonow,thereare59teachersintotalintheDivisionofPhysicalEducation,amongwhich,thereare9professors,33associateprofessorand4Doctoraltutors,8Mastertutors.Amongteachers,thereare11peoplewithDoctor’sDegree,16withMaster'sDegree,5withdualdegrees,24Undergraduatestudents,3Internationalreferees.Thedivisionhasalsotrained23graduatestudentsand6Postgraduatestudentsaswellas6seniorvisitingscholars;Completing58nationalandministriesissuesandpublished423papersintotal.Duringthe2022BeijingOlympicGames,partofthefacultyintheDivisionofPhysicalEducationwasinchargeofrefereeworksonthecourts.Mr.ChenWeiqiangwastheChiefRefereeintheTrackandFieldcompetitionsduringtheOlympics.

PEclassisthecoreofcurriculumsincollegesandphysicalworks,whichisthebasicformofphysicaleducation.ConsideringtheeducationaldemandofTsinghuaUniversity,departmentofphysicaleducationmakesouttheinstructionalplanofphysicaleducationinTsinghuaUniversity.Nowadays,itordersthatthephysicaleducationalmodelofundergraduatestudentsis"4+2+2",andthereareoptionalcourse
