Thishasforcedmoreandmorepeopletodrillwellssotheycangetwaterform.underground.Thereareenormousamountsofwaterdeepundergroundinlakescalledaquifers.Untilrecently,scientistsbelievedthisundergroundwaterwassafefrompollution.Then,inthe1980s.peopleintheUnitedStatesbegantofindchemicalsintheirwellwater,andscientiststookacloserlookatwhatwashappening.WeldonSpring,Missouri,forexample,wasthesiteofabombfactoryduringWorldWarⅡ.Thefactorywasdestroyedafterthewar.butpoisonouschemicalsremainedontheground.Veryslowly,thesechemicalsdrippeddownthroughthegroundandintotheaquifer.Oncetheydid,however,thewaterform.thataquiferwasnolongerdrinkable.
Itprobablyneverwillbedrinkableagain,Undergroundwaterisnotrenewedregularlybytherain,likelakeorriverwater.Thus,ifaharmfulchemicalgetsintoanaquifer,itwillstaythereforaverylongtime.Furthermore,itisnearlyimp6ssibletoremoveallthewaterinanaquiferandcleanoutthepollutants.
IndustrialsiteslikeWeldonSpringareonecauseofundergroundwaterpollution.TherearethousandsofsuchsitesintheUnitedStatesalone,andmanyothersaroundtheworld.Undergroundwaterpollutionisalsocausedbymodernfarmingmethods,whichrequiretheuseoflargeamountsofchemicalsinthefields.Andfinally,yetanotherimportantcauseofundergroundwaterpollutioniswaste.Thatincludessolidwastethrownawayindumpsandlandfills,andalsountreatedhumanandanimalwaste.
Thesituationisindeedveryserious.Fortunately,therearemanyaquifersandtheyareverylarge.Onlyasmallnumberhavebeenseriouslydamagedsofar.Butiftheworlddoesnotwanttogothirstyinthenearfuture,furtherpollutionmustbeprevented.Aroundtheworld,governmentsmustmakerealchangesinindustry,agriculture,andwastedisposal.
