SatellitetelevisionsolvestheproblemsofrangeanddistortionbytransmittingbroadcastsignalsfromsatellitesorbitingtheEarth.Sincesatellitesarehighinthesky,therearealotmorecustomersinthelineofsite.Satellitetelevisionsystemstransmitandreceiveradiosignalsusingspecializedantennascalledsatellitedishes.

Thetelevisionsatellitesareallingeosynchronousorbit,meaningthattheystayinoneplaceintheskyrelativetotheEarth.Eachsatelliteislaunchedintospaceatabout7,000mph(11,000kph),reachingapproximately22,200miles(35,700km)abovetheEarth.Atthisspeedandaltitude,thesatellitewillrevolvearoundtheplanetonceevery24hours—thesameperiodoftimeittakestheEarthtomakeonefullrotation.Inotherwords,thesatellitekeepspacewithourmovingplanetexactly.Thisway,youonlyhavetodirectthedishatthesatelliteonce,andfromthenonitpicksupthesignalwithoutadjustment,atleastwheneverythingworksright.
