Ifhistoriansweretolookbackoverthe20thcenturyandaskwhichsingleworkofartprovedtobeitsmostpopularandenduring,reachingthelargestglobalaudiencesandachievingmostpurchasewithinworldculture,thereisprobablyonlyonechoice:GonewiththeWindbyMargaretMitchell(1900-1949).MargaretMitchellwroteonlyonenovel,thoughshewasaprolificreporterfortheAtlantaJournal.ShewasborninaprominentAtlantalawyer’sfamily.ShespentmuchofherchildhoodlisteningtographicaccountsofCivilWarbattles,theburningofthecity,theuseofthefamilyhouseasanarmyhospital,andthesufferingsofthefamilyandtheirfriendsduringthepostbellumReconstructionperiod.AttendingparadescommemoratingAtlanta’sConfederatedead,learningbyheartCivilWarsongsandminutedetailsofmilitaryskirmishes,battlewounds,andactsofheroism,theyoungMargaretwaswellprimedtowriteadefensive,chauvinisticaccountoftheSouth’swar.ShebeganwritingGonewiththeWindin1926,thenextyearshemarriedJohnMarsh.Thewholewritinglastalmost10years.ThisromanticpictureoflifeintheSouthduringtheAmericanCivilWarbecameabest-selleralmostimmediatelyandwasawardedthePulitzerPrizein1937.Itwasmadeintoamotionpicturethat,afteritsreleasein1939,becameoneofthemostpopularandpraisedofallfilms.Unfortunately,in1949,crossingastreettogotoatheater,MargaretMitchellwaskilledbyadrunkendriver.ThestoryrevolvesaroundScarlettO’Hara,daughterofIrishlandownerGerald,whohasmadetheplantationTaraintooneofGeorgia’sfinest.SheisinlovewithAshleyWilkes,whomarrieshiscousinMelanie.Aswarbegins,ScarletthastoprotectherfamilyandthepregnantMelanie.StayinginAtlantawithrelatives,shefacesSherman’sarmyanddeliversMelanie’sbabyasthecitygoesupinflames.DuringReconstruction,shepragmaticallydoesbusinesswiththeYankeesandsoprospersandrestoresthefortunesofTara.Duringthecourseofthenarrative,shemarries3times—firsttospiteAshley,asecondtimetopayoffTara’spostwartaxes,andthethirdtimeforfun.Herthirdhusband,RhettButler,sharesherwife’spragmatism,blockade-runningduringtheearlypartofthewarandonlylaterjoiningtheConfederateArmy.HeengagesinlucrativedealswiththeFederalArmyfromthestartoftheconflictandrightthroughReconstruction.Enragedathiswife’sloveforAshleyandselfishdisengagementfromhimandtheirdaughter,BonnieBlue,whodiesinaridingaccident,heleavesher.ThenovelendswithScarlettrealizinghowmuchsheloveshimandresolvingtogethimback—byreturningtoherbelovedTaratoplanherstrategy.GonewiththeWindisalongandlovingexplorationofthetraumaticAmericanCivilWarandthedevastationoftheSouth.Thisnovelbelongstoalongtraditionofsouthernplantationfictionandwhiteapologisthistoriography.ItfocusesontheSouth’smostdramatichistoricperiod:Secession,theCivilWar,thebloodydemiseofplantationcultureandtheslaveeconomy,andtheviolentchaosofReconstruction.Indeed,amajorreasonforthecontinuingsuccessofthisworkisitshugeappealtowomenreadersandaudiences.ThefigureofScarlettwaswillingtomoveandexperimentwiththetimes,andpreparedtoplaydangerousgameswithhersexualityandlovedones,whichhasbeenappropriatedbypost-1960sfeministsaswellas1980sand1990s“MeGeneration”careerwomenandfreespirits.Likeallgreatheroines,Scarlettfulfilsavarietyofthematicfunctions:romanticprotagonist,epicfigureandconservativeconformistatwarwithruthlessiconoclast.Here,IwilltakethespeechofScarlettfromChapter5setinthesceneofpreparingforthebarbecuetobeheldinTwelveOakstoanalyseherpersonalityofbeingabeautifulyounggirl.“Oh,hurry!Don’ttalksomuch.I’llcatchahusband.SeeifIdon’t,evenifIdon’tscreamandfaint.Goodness,butmystaysaretight!Putonthedress!”…“IwishtoHeavenIwasmarried,”shesaidresentfullyassheattackedtheyamswithloathing.“I’mtiredofeverlastinglybeingunnaturalandneverdoinganythingIwanttodo.I’mtiredofactinglikeIdon’teatmorethanabird,andwalkingwhenIwanttorunandsayingIfeelfaintafterawaltz,whenIcoulddancefortwodaysandnevergettired.I’mtiredofsaying,‘Howwonderfulyouare!’tofoolmenwhohaven’tgotone-halfthesenseI’vegot,andI’mtiredofpretendingIdon’tknowanything,somencantellmethingsandfeelimportantwhilethey’redoingit.…Ican’teatanotherbite.”…“Whyisitagirlhastobesosillytocatchahusband?”…“Don’tyousupposemengetsurprisedafterthey’remarriedtofindthattheirwivesdohavesense?”…“SomedayI’mgoingtodoandsayeverythingIwanttodoandsay,andifpeopledon’tlikeitIdon’tcare.”ThispartofneatlanguagewelldepictsthepersonalityofyounggirlScarlett.Itrytoanalysethelinguisticpresentationofthethemeaccordingtophonologicalfeatures,punctuations,lexicalfeaturesandsyntacticfeatures.Theoutstandingfeaturesonthephonologyisthefrequentappearanceof/p/,/b/,/t/,/d/,/k/,and/g/.Suchexplosionscanmakeanaculeate,harshandstarchedvoice.Therearealmost190wordsinthespeechabove,amongwhichsuchexplosionsarenearly150;thereare22sentences,amongwhichare16sentencesendingwithsuchexplosions.TheseaculeateandharshvoicerightaccordswiththepersonalityofScarlett,arrogantandhard-going.Scarlettisconfidentinherowncharmandtheslightwaist.Sheisjustlikearosewiththorns.Thesalientfeaturesofpunctuationsarealsoeasilyseeninthemoreusesofexclamationmarksandquestionmarks.Inthe22sentences,thereare4exclamationmarksand2questionmarks.Themoreusesofsuchpunctuationscanmakethewordsmorevividandlively.Tosomeextent,thefigureofScarlettwiththevigourofyouth,passion,stubbornandself-willemergesbeforeus.Asforlexicalfeatures,thatistherepetitionofthewordswithonesyllableorsyllables,suchasdon’t,want,I,get,catchand/ei/.Therepetitionofthewordsandsyllablecreatethebeautifulrhyme,justlikethebeautyofScarlett—beautifulrhymeandbeautifulvitalforce.Thespecialnoticeablephenomenonisthatthereare20timesofIinappearanceinthe22sentences.ThattheletterImakesuptheonlywordcangiveustheimpressionofself-glorification.Andthisexactlycorrespondstoherpersonalityofself-centredness.Onthesyntacticlayer,therearemoresimplesentencesandcomplicatedsentences,whichmakethesentenceseasyandflexible.Andtherearealsosomeparallelisms.Thereare4patternsI’mtiredof,thesubjectclausesofwhicharepositive,andtheclausesofwhichorphasesarenegative.Thematchofpositiveandnegativemakesiambus.Such4iambusstructuresstrengthenthevigorofthelanguagewhilesimultaneouslymakeitwitty.Fromthe4layersofthelanguageanalysedabove,wecanseeitsuccessfullycreatesthefigureofScarlett,clever,forthright,arrogantandstubborn.WecanalsofindourshadowsonScarlettwhenwewereyoung.Theyoungalwaysfulfillvitalforce,energyandillusion.Theyoftenbelieveeverythingwillbelongtothemaslongastheywantto.After

all,

tomorrow

is

another

day.Thisisthefamoussayingendingofthenovel.GonewiththeWindistrulythesimplest,mostromanticlovestoryIhaveyettoread.Itisoneofthosenovelsthatleaveyouspeechlessandinaweafteryouhavefinishedit.Itmademewanttore-readthebookandlookforwardtothesequelScarlett.Iwassodrawntoeverysinglecharacterforeachofthemhasanunforgettablepersonalitythatmakesadeepimpressioninmymind.Ihavetosaythisisanabsolutelyoutstandingbookanddeservesalltheprizesithaswon.
