Abstract
Thedevelopmentofclinicalthinkingabilityisessentialfordentalstudentstobecomecompetentdentalprofessionals.Case-basedteachingisoneoftheeffectiveteachingmethodstodevelopclinicalthinkingability.Thispaperreviewstheliteratureoncase-basedteachinganddiscussesitseffectivenessindevelopingclinicalthinkingabilityamongvocationaldentalstudents.Thepaperconcludesthatcase-basedteachingisaneffectiveteachingmethodtopromoteclinicalthinkingabilityamongdentalstudents.Thisstudysuggeststhatteacherscanadoptcase-basedteachingintheirteachingstrategiesforthedentalstudentstodeveloptheirclinicalthinkingability.
Introduction
Thedentalstudentsneedtodeveloptheabilitytoapplytheoreticalknowledgetopracticetobecomecompetentdentalprofessionals.Clinicalthinkingabilityisessentialtothemtobeabletosolveclinicalproblemsastheyarise.Clinicalthinkingcanbedefinedastheabilitytoapplytheoreticalknowledgetounfamiliarclinicalsituations.Traditionalteachingmethods,suchaslecturesandtextbooks,havelimitationsindevelopingclinicalthinkingability.Case-basedteachingisalearningmethodthatprovidesameansofimprovingclinicalthinkingabilitythroughexperience-basedlearning.Thepurposeofthispaperistoinvestigatetheeffectivenessofcase-basedteachingindevelopingclinicalthinkingabilityamongvocationaldentalstudents.
Case-basedteaching
Case-basedteachingisanapproachtoteachingthatinvolvestheuseofrealorsimulatedcasestoteachaconceptorprinciple.Thecasesusedincase-basedteachingareusuallyderivedfromrealcasesthathaveoccurredinthepast.Thecasesareanalyzedandstructuredtoprovideaccesstotheknowledgeandgeneralprinciples.Case-basedteachinginvolvestheuseofmultiplecasesthatrepresentarangeofproblems,toprovidestudentswithanopportunitytoapplytheirknowledgetodifferentsituations.
Thepedagogyofcase-basedteachingisbasedontheprinciplesofadultlearningtheory,whichemphasizesactivelearning,problem-solving,andlifelonglearning.Thestudentstakeanactiveroleintheirlearning,makingdecisionsandsolvingproblemsusingtheknowledgethattheyhaveacquired.Inthisway,case-basedteachingpromotesindependentlifelonglearning,preparingstudentsforthechallengesoftheconstantlychangingworldofdentistry.
Effectivenessofusingcase-basedteachingindevelopingclinicalthinkingability
Severalstudieshaveestablishedtheeffectivenessofcase-basedteachingindevelopingclinicalthinkingabilityamongvocationaldentalstudents.Thestudieshavereportedthatstudentsexposedtocase-basedteachingperformbetterinclinicalthinkingabilitythanthoseexposedtotraditionalteachingmethods.Theeffectivenessofcase-basedteachingcanbeattributedtoitsabilitytoprovideanauthenticlearningexperience,promotingtransferableskillsandknowledge.

Case-basedteachingprovidesanauthenticlearningexperiencebyallowingstudentstoapplytheirknowledgetorealorsimulatedcases.Thecasesaredesignedtosimulatechallengesthatareencounteredinclinicalpractice,providinganopportunityforstudentstointegratetheirtheoreticalknowledgewithpracticalskills.Thestudentsarethereforebetterpreparedtohandletherealchallengesofclinicalpractice.
Promotestransferableskillsandknowledge
Case-basedteachingpromotesthedevelopmentoftransferableclinicalthinkingskillsthatcanbeappliedtoawiderangeofclinicalsituations.Thestudentslearntogeneralizefromspecificexamples,applyingtheknowledgeandskillsacquiredtonewsituations.Theyalsolearntoidentifypatternsandrelationships,developingtheabilitytomakeconnectionsbetweendifferentpartsofaproblem.Thestudentsbecomemoreproficientproblem-solvers,abletoapplytheirknowledgeandskillsincreativeandinnovativeways.
