Tohelpmakesureyou'redoingeverythingyoucantostaysafeonthebasketballcourt,followthesesafetytips.

WhyIsBasketballSafetyImportant?

Nearlyhalfamillionbasketballinjuriesaretreatedbydoctorsandhospitalseachyear.Fortunately,veryfewofthoseinjuriesarelifethreatening.Some(likebrokenbones,concussions,andligamenttears)canbequiteserious,though.Andwhileplayingthroughthepainmightseemnoble,itcanleadtoseriousmuscleandjointproblemsovertime.

Sprainedanklesarethemostcommonbasketballinjuries,butjammedorbrokenfingers,bruises,bloodyorbrokennoses,andpokedeyesarealltoocommonaswell.Whenplayingoutdoors,abrasions(particularlytothepalmsandfingers)arealwaysarisk.

Indoorballpresentsitsownhazardsintheformofwallsandbleachers,andplayersareboundtocollidegoingafterlooseballsandreboundswherevertheyplay.

GearGuidelines

Ifyou'vegottwopeople,aball,andabasketballhoop,you'vegotjustabouteverythingyouneedforabasketballgame.Butthisdoesn'tmeanyoudon'tneedtopayattentiontowhatyouwear,especiallyonyourfeet.

Beforeyoutakethecourt,takestepstoprotectyourselfbyalwayswearingthefollowing:

Basketballsneakers.Therightshoecangoalongwaytowardreducingankle,foot,andleginjuries.Foraddedanklesupport,someplayerschoosetoplayinhigh-topsneakers,butlow-riseshoeswillsuffice.Allbasketballshoesshouldhaveasturdy,non-skidsoleandshouldbetherightsizeandsecurelylacedatalltimeswhileplaying.Neverplaybasketballinopen-toedshoes,clogs,orheels(itsoundsridiculous,butit'sbeenknowntohappen).

Athleticsupport.Ifyou'reaguy,youdon'thavetowearaprotectivecupunlessyourleaguerequiresitoryouchooseto,butyou'llappreciatehavingagoodathleticsupporterwhenyou'rerunningdownthecourtorjostlingunderthenet.Girlsshouldconsideragoodsportsbra,andmanyplayersofbothsexeschoosetowearsupportiveathleticshortsbeneaththeirbasketballshorts.

Mouthguard.Someyouthleaguesmayrequireplayerstowearamouthguard.Ifyoursdoesn't,youshouldstronglyconsiderwearingoneanywaytoguardagainstbrokenteethandinjuriestothemouth.

Othergear.Playerswhowearglasses,andmanywhowearcontacts,willwanttouseprotectiveeyewearmadeofshatterproofplastic.Playerswithpriorinjuriescanbenefitfromfittedknee,ankle,orwristbracestosupporttheirjointswhileplaying.

WheretoPlay

Sincebasketballcaninvolveanywherefromtwoto10players,itcanbeplayedinsmallspacesaseasilyasgiantarenas.Driveways,playgrounds,gyms,andbarnyardsareallpotentialcourtsandpresentbasketballplayerswithanever-changingvarietyofsurfaces.

Regardlessofwhereyouchoosetoplay,youshouldalwaysinspectthecourtbeforeyoustartandmakesureitisfreeofdebris,particularlybrokenglass(ouch!)andloosegravel.Thecourtsurfaceshouldalsobefreeofanycracks,holes,orirregularitiesthatcouldleadtosprainedortwistedankles.

Ifyou'regoingtoplayoutsideatnight,besurethecourtiswelllitandinasafearea.Indoorcourtsshouldgiveyouplentyofdistancebetweentheedgesofthecourtandanywalls,bleachers,orotherobstacles.Basketstandsandanywallsnearthemshouldbewellpaddedandproperlysecured.Storeextraequipmentlikeballs,gymbags,andothergearwheretheywon'tinterferewithplayersgoingafterlooseballs.

BeforeTip-Off

Aswithmanysports,basketballrequiresrunning,jumping,andotherathleticmovements.Stayingingoodshapeyear-roundwillnotonlymakeyoubetterattheseactions,itwillhelpreduceyourriskofinjuryandimproveyourstaminasoyoucanplayharderforlongerperiodsoftime.Besuretogetplentyofexercisebeforetheseasonstarts,andalwaystrytoeatahealthydiet.

Warmupandstretchbeforeyoustartplaying.Thisdoesn'tmeanjustshootingafewhoopsordribblingwithbothhands.Dosomejumpingjacksorruninplaceforacoupleofminutes,andthenhaveagoodstretchingsession,payingparticularattentiontoyourankles,wrists,calves,andhamstrings.It'sagoodideatostretchafteragame,too.

Practiceshooting,dribbling,layups,andrunningthecourtbeforeyoutrytoduplicatethesemaneuversduringagame.Knowinghowtodowhatyouwanttodowillmakeyourmovementslessawkwardandlesspronetoinjury.Andnaturally,knowtherulesandhowtoplaysafelybeforeyoucompeteagainstotherplayers.

DuringGamePlay

Oncetheballisputinplay,thingswillstarttomovequicklyonthecourt.Knowwhereyourteammatesandanyopponentsareatalltimes.Thiswillhelpyouavoidpotentiallypainfulcollisions.

Foulingotherplayerswillnotonlyhurtyourteamandpossiblylandyouaseatonthebench,it'salsoaverycommonsourceofinjuries.Playwithintherules,withnoshoving,tripping,orholding,andalwaysobeytheofficials.Neverdeliberatelyorflagrantlyfoulanotherplayer.

Ifyougettiredduringthecourseofagame,asktocomeoutforawhiletocatchyourbreath,andbesuretostaywellhydrated.Heatstrokeanddehydrationarelegitimaterisks,particularlyonsunnyoutdoorcourts.

Ifyoufeelpaininanyofyourjointsormuscles,stopplayingrightaway.Don'tresumeplayinguntilthepaingoesawayoryougetclearancefromatrainedphysician.

Lastly,knowwheretheballisatalltimes.Thismayseemobvious,butmanyplayersgethurtbybeinghitwiththeballwhentheyaren'tlooking.Basketballsarehardenoughtoeasilybreakanoseorafinger.

ExcessivePlay

WithsummerAAUprograms,schoolandchurchleagues,travelteams,camps,andall-stargamestochoosefrom,lotsofguysandgirlsspendthewholeyearplayingbasketball.Thiscanleadtomorethanjustburnout.Tendonitisinthewrist,knee,andankleareascanbecomeverypainfulanddebilitatingifuntreated.

Alwaystellacoachorparentifyou'reexperiencinganypaininyourjointsormuscles,andneverignoreanytweaks,spasms,ordiscomfortyoufeelwhileplaying.Prolongingstress-relatedinjurieswillonlymakethemhardertorecoverfrominthelongrun.

Ifyouhaveanyconcernsthatyou'replayingtoomuchbasketball,workwithyourparentsandcoachestotrytoreduceyourschedule.

AFewOtherReminders

Ifit'son-courtandserious,findaref.Youprobablywon'tneedadultsupervisionforgamesofone-on-oneortwo-on-twoinyourdrivewayorattheplayground,butfull-court,five-on-fivebasketballisadifferentstory.Besurearesponsibleadult—beitacoach,parent,orreferee—isonhandforanygameslikethat.
