Thesummaryshouldnotincludedetailsorexamplesthatappearinthearticleunlessageneralconceptcannotbeunderstoodwithoutanillustrationofwhatismeant.Ofcourse,thesummaryshouldbewritteninyourownwordstodemonstratethatyouhaveunderstoodthearticle.Youshouldnevercopysentencesdirectlyfromyourreading.Becauseasummaryisaminiatureversionoftheoriginalreading,youshouldnotexpressyouropinionaboutthesubjectmatter.YouwillhavetheopportunitytodothisintheCritiquesection.Aboutabriefcritique

1)Divide…andconquer.Firstoff,skimthetextyouaregoingtosummarizeanddivideitintosections.Focusonanyheadingsandsubheadings.Alsolookatanybold-facedtermsandmakesureyouunderstandthembeforeyouread.

2)Read.Nowthatyou’veprepared,goaheadandreadtheselection.Readstraightthrough.Atthispoint,youdon’tneedtostoptolookupanythingthatgivesyoutrouble—justgetafeelfortheauthor’stone,style,andmainidea.3)Reread.Rereadingshouldbeactivereading.Underlinetopicsentencesandkeyfacts.Labelareasthatyouwanttorefertoasyouwriteyoursummary.Alsolabelareasthatshouldbeavoidedbecausethedetails—thoughtheymaybeinteresting—aretoospecific.Identifyareasthatyoudonotunderstandandtrytoclarifythosepoints.

4)Onesentenceatatime.Youshouldnowhaveafirmgrasponthetextyouwillbesummarizing.Insteps1–3,youdividedthepieceintosectionsandlocatedtheauthor’smainideasandpoints.Nowwritedownthemainideaofeachsectioninonewell-developedsentence.Makesurethatwhatyouincludeinyoursentencesarekeypoints,notminordetails.

5)Writeathesisstatement.Thisisthekeytoanywell-writtensummary.Reviewthesentencesyouwroteinstep4.Fromthem,youshouldbeabletocreateathesisstatementthatclearlycommunicateswhattheentiretextwastryingtoachieve.Ifyoufindthatyouarenotabletodothisstep,thenyoushouldgobackandmakesureyoursentencesactuallyaddressedkeypoints.6)Readytowrite.Atthispoint,yourfirstdraftisvirtuallydone.Youcanusethethesisstatementastheintroductorysentenceofyoursummary,andyourothersentencescanmakeupthebody.Makesurethattheyareinorder.Addsometransitionwords(then,however,also,moreover)thathelpwiththeoverallstructureandflowofthesummary.Andonceyouareactuallyputtingpentopaper(orfingerstokeys!),rememberthesetips:Writeinthepresenttense.Makesuretoincludetheauthorandtitleofthework.Beconcise:asummaryshouldnotbeequalinlengthtotheoriginaltext.Ifyoumustusethewordsoftheauthor,citethem.Don'tputyourownopinions,ideas,orinterpretationsintothesummary.Thepurposeofwritingasummaryistoaccuratelyrepresentwhattheauthorwantedtosay,nottoprovideacritique.7)Checkforaccuracy.Rereadyoursummaryandmakecertainthatyouhaveaccuratelyrepresentedtheauthor’sideasandkeypoints.Makesurethatyouhavecorrectlycitedanythingdirectlyquotedfromthetext.Alsochecktomakesurethatyourtextdoesnotcontainyourowncommentaryonthepiece.8)Revise.Onceyouarecertainthatyoursummaryisaccurate,youshould(aswithanypieceofwriting)reviseitforstyle,grammar,andpunctuation.Ifyouhavetime,giveyoursummarytosomeoneelsetoread.Thi
