Introduction

Steppermotorisawidelyusedtypeofmotorinvariousindustrialandcommercialapplications.UnliketheDCmotororACmotor,steppermotorcanaccuratelypositiontherotorwithouttheuseofanyencoderorfeedbackmechanism.Thismakesitsuitableforhigh-precisionandrepetitivetaskssuchasinCNCmachines,3Dprinters,robotics,andindustrialautomation.Inthispaper,wewillpresentadesignofasteppermotorcontrolsystembasedonFieldProgrammableGateArray(FPGA)technology.

Background

Tounderstandthesteppermotorcontrolsystem,weneedtofirstunderstandtheprincipleofoperationofthesteppermotor.AsteppermotorisatypeofbrushlessDCmotorthatconvertselectricalpulsesintoangulardisplacement.Itconsistsofarotor,stator,andasetofcoilsthatareenergizedinapatterntocreaterotation.Therotorofasteppermotorhasafixednumberofteeth,andthestatorhasasetofcoilsthatarearrangedinacircularpattern.Whenthecoilsareenergizedinacertainsequence,therotorteethmovetoalignwiththenextsetofstatorteeth,causingtherotortorotate.

Therearetwotypesofsteppermotors,namely,thepermanentmagnetsteppermotor(PM)andthevariablereluctancesteppermotor(VR).ThePMsteppermotorhasapermanentmagnetrotor,whiletheVRsteppermotorhasatoothedrotorthatinteractswithamagneticfieldgeneratedbythestatorcoils.TheVRtypeislesscommonandhaslowerefficiencycomparedtothePMtype.

Design

ThesteppermotorcontrolsystembasedonFPGAconsistsofthefollowingcomponents:

FPGAboard–ThisisthemainboardthathousestheFPGAchipandthenecessarycomponentsforpoweringandprogrammingtheFPGA.Inthisdesign,weusetheAlteraCycloneIIFPGAboard.

Steppermotordriver–Thisisacircuitthatprovidesthenecessaryvoltageandcurrenttoenergizethesteppermotorcoilsinthe

correctsequence.Inthisdesign,weusetheTexasInstrumentsDRV8825steppermotordriver.

Powersupply–ThisisasourceofpowerfortheFPGAboardandthesteppermotordriver.Inthisdesign,weusea12VDCpowersupply.

Serialcommunication–ThisisacommunicationchannelbetweentheFPGAboardandanexternaldevicesuchasacomputerormicrocontroller.Inthisdesign,weuseaUSB-to-serialconvertertoconnecttheFPGAboardtoacomputer.

TheFPGAboardisprogrammedusingVerilogHDLtogeneratetheappropriatesequenceofpulsestodrivethesteppermotor.TheVerilogcodeimplementsafinitestatemachine(FSM)thatcontrolsthedirectionandspeedofthemotor.TheFSMreadsinputsignalsfromtheserialcommunicationchanneltodeterminethedesireddirectionandspeedofthemotor.TheVerilogcodealsoincludesaclockdividertogeneratetheappropriatefrequencyforthesteppermotorcontroller.

ThesteppermotordriverisconnectedtotheFPGAboardviaSPIinterface.TheSPIprotocolisusedtosendthestepanddirectionsignalstothedriverandtoreadbackstatusinformationsuchasthecurrentandtemperatureofthedriver.TheDRV8825driveriscapableofdrivingsteppermotorswithamaximumcurrentof2.5A.Thedriveralsohasabuilt-inprotectioncircuitthatshutsdownthemotorifthecurrentortemperatureexceedsthelimit.

ThepowersupplyisusedtoprovidethenecessaryvoltageandcurrenttopowertheFPGAboardandthesteppermotordriver.Inthisdesign,weusea12VDCpowersupplythatcandeliverupto5Aofcurrent.

TheserialcommunicationchannelisusedtoconnecttheFPGAboardtoanexternaldevicesuchasacomputerormicrocontroller.Inthisdesign,weuseaUSB-to-serialconvertertoconnecttheFPGAboardtoacomputer.TheUSB-to-serialconverterprovidesavirtualCOMportthatcanbeaccessedbythecomputerusingaterminalprogramsuchasPuTTYorHyperTerminal.

Conclusion

Inconclusion,wehavepresentedadesignofasteppermotorcontrolsystembasedonFPGAtechnology.ThesystemconsistsofanFPGAboard,steppermotordriver,powersupply,andserialcommunicationchannel.TheFPGAboardisprogrammedusingVerilogHDLtogeneratetheappropriatesequenceofpulsestodrivethe

steppermotor.ThesteppermotordriverisconnectedtotheFPGAboardviaSPIinterfaceandiscapableofdrivingsteppermotorswithamaximumcurrentof2.5A.Thepowersupplyis
