CHINADAILYOrganizedcultural,historicaltoursfindingfavorwithtravelers,residentsForFangRuiwalkingthestreetsofNanjing,thecapitalofJiangsuprovince,andtakinginthebuildingsandcultureofthehistoricalcityisalmostadailyroutine.BornandraisedinNanjing,the28-year-oldworksasalandscapedesignerinthecityafterstudyingoverseasforseveralyears.Aftershereturnedhomeshefoundthatwalkingthroughthecity,visitingandobservingculturalandhistoricalsites,gaveherlifenewmeaning.InMay,Fangorganizedafreecitywalkforaround50peoplewhocamefromalloverthecountrytoexperienceadeeperconnectionwithNanjing.Thecity-walkpastimeoffollowingplannedroutestoexploreacity'shistory,cultureandurbanenvironmentoriginatedinLondon.ThepastimeisnowattractingagrowingnumberoffollowersinChina,withmanyyoungpeopletakingpart.Thescaleofthetrendishardtomeasure,butwidelysharedsocialmediapostsdocumentdifferentroutesinvariousmetropoliseswithdetaileddescriptionsandpictures.OnXiaohongshu,alifestyle-sharingplatform,thehashtag"Holidaycitywalk"hasmorethan470millionviews.DatafromTongchengTravel,atravelagencybasedinSuzhou,Jiangsuprovince,showsthattravelsearchesrelatedto"citywalk"increasedby108percentinJulyfromthepreviousmonth.WalkingroutesinBeijing,Xi'an,Shaanxiprovince,Chengdu,Sichuanprovince,SuzhouandChangsha,Hunanprovince,haveattractedgreatinterestfromyoungtravelers.Fortouristsaswellaslocalsnotfullyfamiliarwithacity'shistoryandculture,theorganizedwalksareanauthenticandimmersiveexperience.Walkorganizersprovidetheinformationandarepassionateandcareaboutacity'sculturalheritage.Theyalsohaveamorepersonalizedanddeeperunderstandingoftheircity,whichgoesbeyondjustvisitingiconiclandmarks.Differenttoregimentedtravel,wherepeopletrytovisitasmanyplacesaspossibleintheshortestamountoftime,citywalksallowpeopletolingerandabsorbthesurroundings.BondingwithcityFang'sorganizedwalkinMaythroughNanjing'sQinhuaidistrictrenewedherbondwiththecityandhelpedthetourparticipantsbetterunderstanditsculturalheritageinatangibleandinterestingway.ShechosetowalkinCinnaLane,orXinanLi,atouristareathatisnotaspopularorfamousasotherNanjinglandmarkssuchasFuzimiaoConfuciusTempleorSunYat-senMausoleum.Thedistricthaspreservedvarioushistoricalbuildings,withthemostwell-knownbeingtheformerresidenceofthescholarGanXi,whichwasbuiltduringthereignoftheQingEmperorJiaqing(1796-1820).Intermsofitsgrandscaleandlayout,itisbelievedtobethelargestandmostcompleteancientresidentialbuildingcompoundinChina.Thewalkbeganat10:30amonMay28andlastedabout90minutes,withFang'sgroupcoveringadistanceof3.91kilometers.TwoancientsitesinPingshiStreet,themainhistoricalthoroughfareinCinnaLanearea,areworthexploring,shesaid.OneistheDaqiaoBridgelocatedatthestreet'snorthernend,wherewritersandpoetsgatheredinancienttimesduringLanternFestivalinthefirstlunarmonth.TheotherisaJiangxiGuildHall,alsoknownasaWanshouPalace,onPingshiStreet,whichwassaidtobebuiltforthebirthdaycelebrationofEmpressDowagerCixi(1835-1908)duringtheQingDynasty(1644-1911).Duringurbanrenewal,residentslivingintheoldbuildingsalongPingshiStreetweremovedout,Fangsaid,butthehistoricalstructureswereleftstanding.No.89residentialbuilding,constructedintheRepublicofChinaera(1911-49)andlocatedattheintersectionofPingshiStreetandPingzhangAlley,remainsintact.Itsweatheredirongatefeaturesanold-fashionedlionlockandsymmetricaldoubledoorsareembeddedinthehorseheadwall.Thefeaturesconveyafeelingofsteppingbackintime."Oneoftheaimsofourcitywalksistoalsoletparticipantsbecomewitnessestothetransformationofthecityitself,"Fangsaid."Theymayproposetheirownideasaboutthefutureurbandevelopmentofahistoricalneighborhood,"shesaid,addingthismakesthemfeelpartofthecityandshowstheycareaboutthelocalcommunity,thelivingenvironmentand"therapidprocessofurbanization".CitywalkersexplorehistoricalalleywaysinShanghaiinlateMay.
