Forfarmershopingforahealthyharvest,thebestplacetoturnforhelpthese

daysistheMonsantoCorp.Oneoftheworld’sleadingbiotechnology

companies—andlatelyapioneeringeneticallyengineeredseeds—Monsanto

WhilethisarrangementmakessenseforMonsanto,itworksonlyiffarmers

honorit—somethingthat’sdifficulttopoliceintheU.S.andalmost

impossibleinthedevelopingworld.Now,however,Monsantohopesto

enforcebiologicallywhatitcannotenforcecontractually.Withthehelpof

clevergenescurrentlyindevelopment,futureMonsantocropsmaybe

designedwithanewfeatureinmind:sterility(不育).Nosoonerwillthe

company’splantsmaturethantheseedstheycarry,willlosetheabilityto

reproduce.

FromMonsanto’spointofview,thesetofnewgenes—whichothershave

nicknamedTerminator—isaperfectlylegitimatewaytoprotecttheir

intellectual-propertyrights.Noteverybodyagrees.

Letthenewsciencetakehold,opponentswarndarkly,andfarmerscouldfind

themselvescomingtoMonsanto,seedcupinhand,payingwhateverthe
