HelpingKidstoPersevereDespiteMistakesChildrenoftenthinkmisunderstandingsareduetolowerintelligence.KEYPOINTSIfwedon’tallowchildrentofailattimes,theycanhavegreaterstressfromfailuresintherealworld.Explainhowlearningfrommistakesispowerfulcementforlearningthecorrectsolutions.Ifyourchild’sschoolexperiencesareerrorlessandeffortless,theyarenotlikelylearningnewthings.Manychildrenhavemisunderstandingsaboutmistakes.Theymaythinkthatspeedinunderstandingrepresentsknowledgeorthatmistakesareasignoflesserintelligence.MistakesarefrustratingAschildrenstartworkingtobuildskillstheydesire,suchassolvingearlypuzzlesormakingcirclesinsteadofscribbles,theyoftenexperiencethefrustrationofnotdoingit"right."Evenwhenweassurethemthatthereisnorightorwrongwhenstartingout,orthatwithpracticethey'llgetbetterandbetter,manystillsufferdistress.Itissaidthat“Ifwedon’tallowchildrentofailattimes,wearesettingthemupforoverwhelmingdistressfromfailureintherealworld.”Goingfromtheunknowntotheknowninvolvesdetoursthroughuncertaintyandmistakes.Whenyouencouragethinkingbeyondsingleapproachesandallowyourchildrenopportunitiestomakedecisions,choices,andconfronttheirmistakes,youhelpthembuildperseverance.Formanychildreninschool,theirgreatestfearistomakeamistakeinfrontoftheclassmatesandsufferaself-imposedhumiliation.Letthemknowthatalltheirclassmatessufferthesamefears.Helpthemunderstandthatsetbacksprovideopportunitiesforthemtorevisetheirbrains’inaccuratememorycircuitswhich,ifuncorrected,couldimpedefutureunderstandings.Workingthroughperiodsofconfusionstrengthensthecorrectdurablenetworkstheirbrainsultimatelyconstruct.Allowingchildrentomakemistakesandcorrectthemwithapositiveattitudebuildstheirunderstandingandsolidifiesaccuratelearningconnections.HelpingkidsperseverethroughmistakesLearningisaprocessofgoingfromtheunknowntotheknown.Ifyourchild’sschoolexperiencesareerrorlessandeffortless,theyarenotlikelylearningnewthings.Theymaydowellontests,butthebrainlikesachallengethatisrecognizedasachievable.Remindchildrenofstrugglestheyhadwithmistakestheymadeonthepathtoachievinggoalsthey’veaccomplished.“Rememberwhenyouwerelearningtoplaysoccerandyoukepttryingeventhoughyoufeltlikegivingup?Rememberwhenyoustruggledtoplaybasicchordsontheguitarandnowyouhavemasteredsomany?Rememberyourfirstattemptstowriteandnowit’seasyforyou?”Helpthemrecallthatwitheffortandpractice,theymadefewermistakesandenjoyedthepleasureofgreaterskills.Herearesomemorethingstotry:Whenhelpingthemstudy,don’tavoidaskingquestionsthatarechallengingforfearthattheywillbetoofrustratedtotry.Extendyourwaittime–don’tgivetheanswerstotheirquestionsbeforetheyhaveenoughtimetoreallyconsiderthequestionandtrypossibleanswers.Expandtheirperseveranceandunderstandingwithquestionsthathavemorethanonecorrectanswer.Afteracorrectanswer,askifthereareanyotherpossiblesolutionsoranswers.Askquestionswheretheyneedtoexplaintheirreasonsandconsideralternativeoradditionalsolutions.Tellyourkidsaboutsomewhoppermistakesyoumadethatwillmakethemlaugh…andlearnthatlifedoesgoonafterbigmistakes.Encouragethemtotellyouaboutmistakestheyhavemadeinthepastandhowtheyfeltandreacted.Askthemwhattheywoulddodifferentlynowconfrontingsimilarissues.Provideexamplesofpeopletheyadmirewhodescribedtheirstruggleswithmistakes.MichaelJordancommented:“I'vemissedmorethan9000shotsinmycareer.I’velostalmost300games.I’vefailedoverandoverandoveragaininmylife.AndthatiswhyIsucceed.”SettingthestageforsuccessInvitediscussionsaboutthemistakesweallmakewhenweimpulsivelyrespondwithoutthoroughlyconsideringtheoutcome.Discussexamplesthatmayapplytothemsuchas:Sendingatextmessageormediapostingwithoutconsideringallpossibleoutcomes.Decidingearlyinamovieorbookthatacharacteristhebadguy,thenfindingoutmoreaboutthepersonandrealizingthattheyjumpedtotheiropinionstooquickly.(Perhapsthishasevenhappenedintheminreallifeinjudgingpeopletooquicklyfromappearancesorinitialinteractions.Followingalongwiththecrowdorwhatfriendsdo,withoutconsideringthepossiblenegativeoutcomes.Makingcarelessmistakesbystartingthetestorassignmentbeforereadingalltheinstructions.Rushingthroughreadingandfindingtheydon’trememberwhattheyread.Choosingthefirstmultiple-choiceanswerthatseemsrightwithoutlookingattheotheroptionsthatreallyincludedthemostcorrectresponse.SuggestionstohelpyourkidslearnfrommistakesandusethemforbetterfuturesuccessBeaguideontheside.Insteadofgivinganswers,encouragekidstoanalyze,predict,evaluateforpossiblesolutionsthemselves.Remindthemofwhattheyalreadyknowaboutthetopicandtheskillstheyhavedevelopedthatcouldguidethemwiththechallenge.Recognizetimeswhentheymademistakesandtookthetimetothinkaboutthem,learnfromthem,anddidbetterthenexttime.Knowsomeofthepitfallstoavoid.Askteachersorfriends,whotooktheirclasspreviously,whatcommonmisunderstandingsormistakeshavebeenmadeinvolvingthetopictheyarestarting.Explainhowlearningfrommistakes—understandingwheretheymadethemistake—ispowerfulcementforthecorrectsolutions/answers.Whenatestisreturned,taketheopportunitytofindouttherightanswerssotheireagerbrainswillwireinthecorrectinformationforfutureuse.Whatcommontypesofmist
