Purpose:tohelpstudentsjoinpairsofsentenceswithand,butandso

Ask"Whatdoyouknowaboutelephants?".Letstudentsspeakfreelyaboutelephants,sayingwhattheyknowaboutthem,includingsize,behaviour,habitat,diet,etc..Don'tworryaboutfluency,justletstudentsexpressthemselves.Ifyoufeelyourstudentsareready,youmayskipthisstep.

RevisethetableinExercise5andtherulesforusingand,butandso.Directstudentstothepairsofsentences.Pointoutthatbothaandbaresentences.Say"Thinkaboutthesentences.Aretheyconnectingsimilarideas?Aretheyparingorcontrastingideas?Aretheyexpressingaresult?"Givestudentsafewmomentstolookatthesentencesandthinkaboutthem.Youmaywishtohavestudentsdiscusstheminpairs.Thensay"Nowjointhepairsofsentenceswithand,butorso"Monitorasstudentswritethesentences,offeringhelpasneeded.Ifstudentsneedsupport,havethemworkinpairs.
