UnitOneTextAHowtoReadABookIntroductoryRemarks“Somebooksaretobetasted,otherstobeswallowed,andsomefewtobechewedanddigested.〞FrancisBaconwarnedreadersseveralhundredyearsago.However,whatarethecriteriaforthosebookstobe“chewedanddigested?〞Howtotellgoodliteraturefrombadliterature?Ontheseissues,peopledon’tseemtohavereachedanagreement. Yourfirstsurmisewasright.Whoeversaidthattophilosophizeisanexerciseindyingwasrightinmorewaysthanone,forbywritingabooknobodygetsyounger.Somepeoplesaythattothinkphilosophicallyistoexperiencetheprocessofdeath.Thatisrightinmanyaspects,asintheprocessofwritingabook,theauthoronlygetsolderandolder.philosophizev.:conductphilosophicalthinking;reasonphilosophically e.g.,Theyspendtheirtimephilosophizingaboutthemysteriesoflife. atendencytophilosophizeaboutracialharmonyTheparadox,however,liesinthefactthatinliterature“good〞isdefinedbyitsdistinctionfrom“bad〞.But,whatseemscontradictoryisthatinliteraturegoodworksareidentifiedbyitsdistinctionfrombadworks,i.e.,apieceofworkisgoodbecauseitisnotbad.That’swhatmayconstitutebadliterature’sbestdefenseattheLastJudgment.Thatmaybethereasonwhythereexistsomanypiecesofbadliterature.Ofcourse,thereisnodenyingthepleasureofholdingupwithafat,slow-moving,mediocrenovel;butintheend,wereadnotforreading’ssakebuttolearn.Ofcourse,thereispleasureofsomekindinreadingathick,lengthyandordinarynovel;butintheend,wedonotreadjustforthesakeofreadingbutreadforlearningsomething.thereisnodenying:itcannotbedenied;onecannotdenythefactthat e.g.Thereisnodenyingtheenjoymentofavacationafterlongperiodofhardwork..
