WhilePythagoraswasanearlyproponentofameatlessdiet,humanshavebeenvegetarianssincewellbeforerecordedhistory.Mostanthropologistsagreethatearlyhumanswouldhaveeatenapredominantlyplant-baseddiet;afterall,plantscan’trunaway.Additionally,ourdigestivesystemsresemblethoseofherbivorescloserthancamivorousanimals.Prehistoricmanatemeat,ofcourse,butplantsformedthebasisofhisdiet.
Pythagorasandhismanyfollowerspracticedvegetarianismforseveralreasons,mainlyduetoreligiousandethicalobjections.Pythagorasbelievedalllivingbeingshadsouls.Animalswerenoexception,SOmeatandfishwerebanishedfromhistable.Strangelyenough,healsobanishedavegetablethathasaplaceofhonoronmostvegetarianmenustoday,thehumblebean.Hisfollowerswereforbiddentoeatoreventouchbeans,becausehethoughtbeansandhumanswerecreatedfromthesamematerial.Favabeanswereespeciallybad,astheyhavehollowsteamsthatcouldallowthesoulsofthedeadtotravelupfromthesoilintothegrowingbeans.
