Abstract:Recommendedpracticesforthedesignofdcpowersystemsforstationaryapplicationsareprovidedinthisdocument.Thecomponentsofthedcpowersystemaddressedbythisdocumentincludelead-acidandnickel-cadmiumstoragebatteries,staticbatterychargers,anddistributionequipment.Guidanceinselectingthequantityandtypesofequipment,theequipmentratings,interconnections,instrumentationandprotectionisalsoprovided.Thisrecommendationisapplicableforpowergeneration,substation,andtelecommunicationapplications.

DCpowersystemscontinuetoplayavitalroleingeneratingstation,substation,andtelecomcontrolsandprovidingbackupforemergencies.Thisrecommendedpracticefulfilsaneedwithintheindustrytoprovidecommonorstandardpracticesforthedesignofdcpowersystems.Thedesignfeaturesareapplicabletoallinstallationsandsystemscapacities.
TheoriginalissueofIEEEStd946waspublishedin1985withthetitleIEEERecommendedPracticefortheDesignofSafety-RelatedDCPowerSystemsforNuclearPowerGeneratingStations.The1992revisionchangedthetitletoapplytoallgeneratingstations,whileincludingspecificguidanceandadetailedbibliographyofnucleardesignreferencestandards.Thisrevisionmakesageneralupdatetoreflectthemostrecentindustrypracticesaswellassubstantialadditionstoannexes.Inadditiontopowergenerationapplications,thisrecommendedpracticecoversdcpowersystemdesigninsubstationsandtelecommunicationapplications.Somediscussionsandillustrativefigureshavebeenretainedastheyofferaconstructivecomparisontodesignswithouthavingtoresorttoadditionalstandards.
ThisrecommendedpracticewaspreparedbyaWorkingGroupthatispartoftheEnergyStorageandStationaryBatteryCommitteeandwassponsoredbytheEnergyDevelopmentandPowerGenerationCommitteeoftheIEEEPowerandEnergySociety.
