BlackFridayisthedayfollowingThanksgivingDay1intheUnitedStates,oftenregardedasthebeginningoftheChristmasshoppingseason.Inrecentyears,mostmajorretailershaveopenede*tremelyearlyandofferedpromotionalsalestokickofftheholidayshoppingseason,similartoBo*ingDaysalesinmanyCommonwealthNations.BlackFridayisnotanofficialholiday,butmanynon-retailemployeesandschoolshavebothThanksgivingandthedayafteroff,followedbyaweekend,therebyincreasingthenumberofpotentialshoppers.Ithasroutinelybeenthebusiestshoppingdayoftheyearsince2022,althoughnewsreports,whichatthattimewereinaccurate,havedescribeditasthebusiestshoppingdayoftheyearforamuchlongerperiodoftime.

Theday’snameoriginatedinPhiladelphia,whereitoriginallywasusedtodescribetheheavyanddisruptivepedestrianandvehicletrafficwhichwouldoccuronthedayafterThanksgiving.Useofthetermstartedbefore1961andbegantoseebroaderuseoutsidePhiladelphiaaround1975.Lateranalternativee*planationbegantobeoffered:that“BlackFriday”indicatesthepointatwhichretailersbegintoturnaprofit,orare“intheblack”.

Formanyyears,itwascommonforretailerstoopenat6:00am,butinthelate2000smanyhadcrept6to5:00oreven4:00.Thiswastakentoanewe*tremein2022,whenseveralretailersopenedatmidnightforthefirsttime.In2022,Walmartandseveralotherretailersannouncedthattheywouldopenmostoftheirstoresat8:00pmonThanksgivingDay(e*ceptinstateswhereopeningonThanksgivingisprohibitedduetobluelaws,suchasMassachusettswheretheystillopenedaroundmidnight),promptingcallsforawalkoutamongsomeworkers.7AnotherNewTerm—BlackThursday
