Theworldartmarkethadalreadybeenlosingmomentumforawhileafter
risingvertiginouslysince2003.Atitspeakin2007itwasworthsome
$65billion,reckonsClareMcAndrew,founderofArtsEconomics,aresearch
firm-doublethefigurefiveyearsearlier.Sincethenitmayhavecome
downto$50billion.Butthemarketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssize
becauseitbringstogethergreatwealth,enormousegos,greed,passion
andcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfewotherindustries.
IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMrHirst'ssale,spendingof
anysortbecamedeeplyunfashionable,especiallyinNewYork,wherethe
