findout,heandhiscolleaguesgottheirhandsonnearly1,000chickenbonesfromancienttimesacrossEuropeand
Asia,someofthemupto2000yearsold.SectionsofDNAfromtheseremainsweremappedontotheonesoftoday's
virus.
AstheauthorspiecedtogetherthesetsofgenesofancientMDV,however,theynoticedthatthegeneswere
arrangedidenticallytothoseinmodernspecies.Itsuggeststhattheincreasedvirulenceresultednotfromlarge
structuralchanges,butfrompointmutations(突變).Inparticular,changeshadoccurredinthearrangementofa
