在演講開頭前，首先我想問一下各位在座的伴侶是否都受過蚊蟲叮咬之苦?我代表全部捕蚊者向大家賠禮。

Ladiesandgentlemen,imaginegettingseveninfectiousmosquitobiteseveryday.Thats2,555infectiousbiteseveryyear.WhenIwasincollege,ImovedtotheKilomberoRivervalleyinthesoutheasternpartofTanzania.Thisishistoricallyoneofthemostmalariouszonesintheworldatthattime.Lifeherewasdifficult.Initslaterstagesmalariamanifestedwithextremeseizureslocallyknownasdegedege.Itskilledbothwomenandmen,adultsandchildren,withoutmercy.

Myhomeinstitution,IfakaraHealthInstitute,beganinthisvalleyinthe1950stoaddresspriorityhealthneedsforthelocalcommunities.Infact,thenameIfakarareferstoaplaceyougotodie,whichisareflectionofwhatlifeusedtobehereinthedaysbeforeorganizedpublichealthcare.WhenIfirstmovedhere,myprimaryrolewastoestimatehowmuchmalariatransmissionwasgoingonacrossthevillagesandwhichmosquitoesweretransmittingthedisease.

Somycolleagueandmyselfcame30kilometerssouthofIfakaratownacrosstheriver.Everyeveningwewentintothevillageswithflashlightsandsiphons.Werolledupourtrousers,andwaitedformosquitoesthatwerecomingtobiteussowecouldcollectthemtocheckiftheywerecarryingmalaria.

為此，我和同事來到跨過河30公里以外的ifakara鎮(zhèn)以南。每晚我們都帶著手電筒和虹吸管去村子里我們卷起褲管等著蚊子來叮咬我們因此，我們可以收集它們檢查它們是否攜帶瘧疾病毒。

Mycolleagueandmyselfselectedahousehold,andwestartedinsideandoutside,swappingpositionseveryhalfhour.Andwedidthisfor12hourseverynightfor24consecutivenights.Wesleptforfourhourseverymorningandworkedtherestoftheday,sortingmosquitoes,identifyingthemandchoppingofftheirheadssotheycouldbeanalyzedinthelabtocheckiftheywerecarryingmalariaparasitesintheirbloodmouthparts.Thiswaywewereabletonotonlyknowhowmuchmalariawasgoingonherebutalsowhichmosquitoeswerecarryingthismalaria.Wewerealsoabletoknowwhethermalariawasmostlyinsidehousesoroutsidehouses.

我和同事選了一戶人家然后我們開頭屋里屋外站崗，每隔半小時(shí)換一班，每晚值班12個(gè)小時(shí)，連續(xù)干了24個(gè)晚上。我們每天早上睡4個(gè)小時(shí)其余時(shí)間都始終工作我們將收集到的蚊子分類，辨認(rèn)它們并切下它們的頭這樣它們就可以被送到試驗(yàn)室里去分析了看它們帶血的口器里是否攜帶瘧原蟲。這樣，我們不僅知道有多少例瘧疾發(fā)生也知道是哪種蚊子攜帶瘧疾源我們還可以知道瘧疾是常在屋內(nèi)感染還是在屋外。

Considerthefactthatatthemomentourbestpracticeagainstmalariaarebednets--insecticidetreatedbednets.WeknownowthatacrossAfricayouhavewidespreadresistancetoinsecticides.Andthesearethesameinsecticides,thepyrethroidclass,thatareputonthesebednets.Weknownowthatthesebednetsprotectyoufrombitesbutonlyminimallykillthemosquitoesthattheyshould.Whatitmeansisthatwevegottodomoretobeabletogettozero.Andthatspartofourduty.

Butperhapsthefactthatmosquitoeseatblood,humanblood,isthereasontheyarethemostdangerousanimalonearth.Butthinkaboutitthisway--mosquitoesactuallysmellyou.Andtheyhavedevelopedincrediblesensoryorgans.Theycansmellfromasfarsometimesas100metersaway.Andwhentheygetcloser,theycaneventellthedifferencebetweentwofamilymembers.
