oneoftheothers)intheSchoolofMathematics.

WorldWarIIhugelychangedvonNeumann'sareasofinterest.Until1940hehad

beenagreatpure(純粹的)mathematician.Duringandafterthewar,hebecameoneof

thebestmathematicianswhoputmathematicstheoriesintopractice.Duringthelast

partofthewarhebecameinterestedincomputingmachinesandmadeseveralfundamental

contributions.Afterthewar,vonNeumanncontinuedhisworkwithcomputers,andwas

generallyveryactiveingovernmentservice.Hereceivedmanyawards,waspresident

oftheAmericanMathematicalSocietyandwasamemberoftheAtomicEnergy

Commission.Hediedin1957ofcancer.

VonNeumannmadeseveralgreatcontributionsandanyoneofthemwouldhavebeen
