isasenseofdisappointmentonthepartofthebeststudents,exactly

thoseforwhomthesystemshouldpresentthegreatestchallenges.Thus,

auniversitytryingtopromoteprofessorsprimarilyonthebasisof

teachingqualitieswouldhavetoconfrontthisconfusion.

Asmodernsciencemovesfaster,twoforcesareexertedon

professorsoneisthetimeneededtokeepupwiththeprofession:theother

isthetimeneededtoteach.Thetrainingofnewscientistsrequires

outstandingteachingattheresearchuniversityaswellasthearts

college.Althoughscientistsareusually“made"intheelementaryschools,

scientistscanbe“l(fā)ost"bypoorteachingatthecollegeandgraduateschool
