turnedtheUnitedNationsforhelpin1959.

Amittee(establish)tolimitdamagetotheEgyptianbuildingsandpreventthe(lose)ofculturalrelics.Thegroupaskedforcontributionsfromdifferentdepartmentsandraised(fund)withintheinternationalmunity.Expertsinvestigatedtheissue,conductedseveraltests,thenmadeaproposalforthebuildingscouldbesaved.Finally,adocument

(sign),andtheworkbeganin1960.

Theprojectbroughtgovernmentsandenvironmentalistsfromaround

theworld.Templesandotherculturalsitesweretakendownpiecepiece,

andthenmovedandputbacktogetheragaininaplacewheretheyweresafe

thewater.In1961,German(engineer)movedthefirsttemple.Overthenext20years,thousandsofengineersandworkersrescued22templesandcountlessculturalrelics.Fiftycountriesdonatednearly$80millionthe

project.

Whentheprojectendedin1980,itwasconsideredgreatsuccess.Notonlyhadthecountriesfoundapathtothefuturethatdidnotruntherelicsofthepast,theyhadalsolearntthatitwaspossibleforcountriestowork

together(build)abettertomorrow.

ThespiritoftheAswanDamprojectisstillalivetoday.Perhapsthebestexample

(show)byUNESCO,which(run)aprogrammethatpreventsworldculturalheritagesitesaroundtheworlddisappearing.Ifaproblemseemstoodifficultforasinglenation,the(globe)munitycan

sometimesprovideasolution.

TheMogaoCaveshavelongbeena(meet)pointfordifferentculturesandarepartofthehistoryofmanycountries.Today,thecavesarejustinternationalastheywereatthetimepeopletravelledtheSilkRoad.TouristsfromallovertheworldvisitDunhuangtoseethecaves,theGettyMuseuminLosAngeleshasevenreproducedacopyofthecavesandpaintingsfor

people(admire)inAmerica.

BysharingsomanydigitalphotosovertheInternet,thegrouphopestopromoteeven(wide)interestaroundtheworldChina’sancienthistory,culture,andtraditions.Theyalsohopeto(far)educatepeopleabouttheimportanceofsafeguardinghistoricandculturalrelicsforfuturegenerationstounderstandandappreciate.oneresearcherwhoisworkingontheprojectexplains,“(appreciate)one’sownculturalheritageisveryimportantforunderstandingoneself.Appreciatingtheculturalheritageofcountriesis

veryimportantforinternational(municate)andunderstanding.”
