?Anestimated1.1billioninternationaltouristarrivals(overnightvisitors)wererecordedintheJanuary-September2024,about11%morethaninthesameperiodof2023.
?Internationalarrivalsreached98%of2019levelsinthefirstninemonthsoftheyear(-2%oversameperiodof
2019)followingastrongNorthernHemispheresummerseason.
?Resultsweredrivenbystrongpost-pandemicdemandinEuropeandrobustperformancefromlargesourcemarketsglobally,aswellastheongoingrecoveryofdestinationsinAsiaandthePacific.Increasedairconnectivityandvisafacilitationalsosupportedinternationaltravel.
?MostdestinationsreportingmonthlydatacontinuedtoenjoystrongresultsinJanuary-September2024comparedtothesameperiodin2023,withamajorityexceedingpre-pandemiclevels.

?Othertourismindustryindicatorsalsoreflectthisglobalrecovery.AccordingtotheUNTourismRecoveryTracker,internationalpassengertrafficfullyrecoveredpre-pandemiclevelsinthemonthsthroughSeptember2024,whileinternationalaircapacityreached99%of
2019levels(IATA).Globaloccupancyratesinaccommodationestablishmentsreached69%inOctober2024,slightlyabovethelevelinAugust2023(68%)basedonSTRdata.
TheMiddleEastcontinuestoshowstrongestgrowthwhileAsiaandthePacificconsolidatesitsrecovery
?TheMiddleEastremainedthestrongest-growingregioninrelativeterms,withinternationalarrivalsclimbing29%above2019levelsinthefirstninemonthsof2024.
?SomeMiddleEasterndestinationsreportedstrongresultsthroughSeptember2024,amongwhichQatar(+141%),wherearrivalsmorethandoubledcomparedto2019,aswellasSaudiArabia(+61%),Oman(+19%)andJordan(+16%).
?Europe,theworld’slargestdestinationregion,sawarrivalsexceedpre-pandemicnumbersby1%inthefirstninemonthsof2019,followingrobustintra-regionaldemand.
?ThehighestgrowthinEuropewasreportedbyAlbania(+77%),Andorra(+36%),Malta(+30%),Serbia(+28%),andLuxembourg(+24%)wherearrivalsclimbedwellabove2019values.
?Amongthelargerdestinations,Portugalreported18%growththroughSeptember2024andDenmark16%,whileGreeceandTürkiyebothrecorded13%morearrivalsandSpain10%.Atotalof30Europeandestinationssurpassedpre-pandemiclevelsthisperiod.
?Africawelcomed6%moreinternationalarrivalsinJanuary-September2024comparedtothesameperiodof2019.Tanzania(+43%)andMorocco(+29%)bothreporteddouble-digitgrowthandKenya(+9%)alsoexceeded2019numbers.
?TheAmericasrecovered97%ofpre-pandemicarrivalsthisnine-monthperiodduetosolidintraregionaldemand.StrongoutboundtravelfromtheUnitedStatesbenefitteddestinationsinCentralAmericaandtheCaribbeaninparticular.
?Cura?ao(+48%),Colombia(+36%),Guatemala(+31%),andtheDominicanRepublic(+29%)wereamongthestrongestperformersinthefirstninemonthsof2024.

?InternationaltourismcontinuedtoexperiencearapidthoughunevenrecoveryinAsiaandthePacificwherearrivalsreached85%ofitspre-pandemictouristnumbers(-15%versus2019)ascomparedto66%attheendof2023.Internationalarrivalsclimbedto92%inthemonthofAugustand90%inSeptember.
?SouthAsiasawthebestresultsbyAsiansubregions,witha94%recovery,followedbySouth-EastAsia(87%),Oceania(83%)andNorth-EastAsia(81%).
?Acrossindividualdestinations,Mongoliapostedthehighestgrowthintheregion(+24%versus2019),followedbyMaldives(+19%)andJapan(+10%)whichbenefittedfromthedepreciationoftheyenandenhancedconnectivity.Fijisaw9%moreinternationalarrivalsthisperiodandSriLanka8%more.
?AccordingtoairbookingdataprovidedbyForwardKeys,internationalairtraveltoChinaimprovedfrom-44%inQ32023to-18%inQ32024,showingasteadyrecoveryofChina’sinboundtravel.On22November2024,Chinaextendedtheunilateralvisa-freepolicytocoverasixthbatchofninemorecountriesincludingBulgaria,Romania,Croatia,Montenegro,NorthMacedonia,Malta,Estonia,LatviaandJapan,bringingtotalcountriesexemptedfromvisatoenterChinato38.
NorthAfricaandCentralAmericaremainedthestrongestsubregions
?Bysubregions,NorthAfricaandCentralAmericasawthestrongestperformanceinJanuary-September2024,with18%and16%moreinternationalarrivalsthanbeforethepandemicrespectively.TheCaribbean(+9%)andSouthernMediterraneanEurope(+7%)alsoenjoyedrobustgrowth,followedbyNorthernEurope(+6%)andWesternEurope(+5%).
?SouthAmericaandSubsaharanAfricarecovered97%and96%oftheirpre-pandemicnumbersrespectively.
Receiptsgrowfasterthanarrivals
?Internationaltourismreceiptshaveseenextraordinarygrowthfollowinganalreadystrong2023,surpassingpre-pandemiclevelsinmostdestinations.In2023receiptshadreached98%of2019levels(realterms).
?Receiptshavegrownfasterthanarrivalsinmostdestinationsreportingdatasofarin2024,reflectinghigheraveragespendingpertrip.
?Atotalof35outof43countrieswithavailabledataexceededpre-pandemicreceiptsinthefirsteighttoninemonthsof2024,manyreportingdouble-digitgrowthcomparedto2019(inlocalcurrencies),andwellaboveinflationinmostcases.
?AmongthebestperformersintermsofearningswereSerbia(+99%)wherereceiptsmorethandoubled(comparedtothesamemonthsof2019),aswellasPakistan(+64%),Romania(+61%),Japan(+59%),Portugal(+51%),NicaraguaandTanzania(both+50%).
?Japan(+59%),Türkiye(+41%)andFrance(+27%)wereamongtheworld’stopearnerstorecorddouble-digitgrowththroughSeptember2024comparedtothesameperiodof2019.Spain(+36%)andItaly(+26%)alsoreportedstronggrowthinvisitorreceipts,throughAugust.TheUnitedKingdomrecorded43%higherearnings,Canada35%,andAustralia18%,allthroughJune.AsfortheUnitedStates,theworld’stoptourismearner,thedestinationreported7%growththroughSeptember.
?Dataoninternationaltourismexpenditurereflectsthesametrend,especiallyamonglargesourcemarketssuchasGermany(+35%comparedto2019),theUnitedStates(+33%)andFrance(+11%).
?StrongexpendituregrowthwasalsoreportedbytheUnitedKingdom(+46%)Australia(+34%),Canada(+28%)andItaly(+26%)allthroughJune2024.AvailabledataforIndiashowsasurgeinoutboundspendingfromthisincreasinglyimportantmarket,with81%growththroughJune2024(versus2019).
?Robusttourismspendingfrommanysourcemarketsreflectsstrongpost-pandemictraveldemandbutalsoahighervisitorspendingbyconsumerspartlyduetolongerperiodsofstay.
?China,theworld’stoptourismspender,reachedpre-pandemicexpenditurefiguresinthefirsthalfof2024,with42%growthcomparedto2023.DatareportedthroughSeptemberbynearbydestinationssuchasMalaysia,SingaporeandJapan,showasteadyincreaseinarrivalsfromChina,supportedbyeasedvisarequirements.

?AfterfouryearssincethestartoftheCOVID-19pandemic,internationaltouristarrivalsareontracktoreach2019levelsbytheendof2024.
?Thepaceofrecoveryhasbeenmoremoderateinthesecondhalfof2024,reflectingagradualnormalizationofgrowthratesafteranalreadystrongyear2023.
?Whilealargenumberofdestinationsalreadyexceededpre-pandemicarrivalnumbersin2023,orhasdonesoin2024,thereisstillroomforrecoveryacrossseveralsubregionsanddestinations.AslowerreboundinpartsofNorth-EastAsiaandCentralEasternEuropecontrastswithstrongresultsinotherEuropeansubregions,theMiddleEast,CentralAmericaandtheCaribbean,wherearrivalshavesurpassedpre-pandemicvalues.
?Asin2023,theyear2024willalsobemarkedbystrongexportrevenuesfrominternationaltourismasaresultofhigheraveragespendingpertrip(excludingtheeffectsofinflation).Internationaltourismvirtuallyachievedpre-pandemicvaluesin2023withUSD1.8trillion(includingreceiptsandpassengertransportfares),or99%ofpre-pandemicvalues.
?Thestronggrowthseenintourismreceiptsisbenefittingmanyeconomiesaroundtheworld,especiallythosemoredependentontourismforexportrevenues.Visitorspendingindestinationscontributestoimprovecountries’tradebalance,aswellascreatejobs,supportsmallbusinesses,fosterinfrastructuredevelopmentandgeneratetaxrevenues.
?However,economic,geopoliticalandclimatechallengesremain.Thetourismsectorisstillfacinginflationintravelandtourism,namelyhightransportandaccommodationprices,aspartofhigherservicesinflation,aswellasvolatileoilprices.Majorconflictsandgeopoliticaltensionsaroundtheworldcontinuetoimpactconsumerconfidence.Extremeweathereventsandstaffshortagesarealsocriticalchallengesaffectingtourismperformance.
