welcominguncomfortablefeelingsbysaying"yes"aloudeachtimeafeelingisdetected.

Wehired153stressedadultsandofferedthemamindfulnessmeditationtrainingprogramwithorwithout

traininginequanimity.Ourequanimityskillstraininggrouphadsignificantlybetteroutcomesonseveralmeasures.

Afterjust14daysoftraining,forexample,theparticipantswholearnedequanimityskillshadsignificantlylower

biologicalstressresponseswhenaskedtodeliveradifficultspeechandsolvemathproblemsinfrontofexpertsin

whitelabcoats.Thisgroupalsohadsignificantlylowerbloodpressureandstresslevels.Inthedaysaftertraining,

peopleintroducedtoequanimityexercisesalsoreportedsignificantlyhigherpositiveemotionsandwell-being

throughoutthedayandmoremeaningfulsocialinteractionsthanparticipantswhoreceivedmindfulnesstraining

decades,thesesubstanceshavebeenusedinawiderangeofconsumerproducts,fromcookwaretopesticidesto

cosmetics,becausetheyareproofagainstwaterandgrease.

GeuekeandherteamfoundamismatchbetweenwhattheydetectedinactualproductsandadatabaseofPFAS

chemicalsauthorizedforuseinfoodpackaging.About140PFASsareknowntobeusedinfoodpackaging,but

onlysevenofthe68chemicalsinthestudywereonthislist.Geuekesaysit'sunclearhoworwhytheother61

chemicalsturnedup.DavidAndrews,achemistandtoxicologistatanonprofitenvironmentaladvocacy

organization,suggestsit'spossiblethatunknownimpuritiesemergedduringthemanufacturingoftheauthorized

chemicalsorthattheauthorizedPFASsdegradeovertime.Thisclassofchemicalsincludesmanylong-chain
