ThepiecewaswrittenbySandraMartin-ChangofConcordiaUniversityinCanada,andherstudentStephanieKozak.

Martin-ChangandKozakusedascale(量表)calledthePredictorsofLeisureReading(PoLR)toinvestigate

readingbehaviours(motivations,attitudesandinterests).TheythenexaminedhowwellthePoLRpredictedthe

languageskillsof200undergraduatestudents,withalldatagatheredatYorkUniversityinToronto.Theresearchers

notethattheagerangeofthesubjectsinthestudyisofkeyinterest.Inearlyadulthood,readingbecomesself-directed

ratherthanforcedbyparentsorteachers,whichmakesthisaperfecttimefbrdevelopingone'sownreadinghabits.

Thispopulationisalsoratherunderstudied,v/ithmostexistingresearchfocusingfarmoreonchildren.

Theresearchersadministeredaseriesofmeasuresovertwoseparatehalf-hoursessions.First,thevolunteers

completedthe48-questionPoLRscalemeasuringvariousreadingbehaviours.Theywerethengivenlanguagetests.

Theresearchersfoundthatpeoplewhoenjoyedreadingfictionfbrleisureandwhoidentifiedthemselvesasreaders

scoredhigheronthelanguagetests,whilethosewhoreadtoaccessspecificinformationscoredmorepoorlyonthe

sametests.

Themanybenefitsofreadinghavelongbeenestablished.Besideshavingbetterlanguageabilities,lifelong

readersareknowntobemoreunderstandingofothers,attainhighersocioeconomicstatusandevenlivelonger,

healthierlivesthannon-readers.
