Uncheckedhuntingwipedoutanumberoflargespecies,andtodaymining,
loggingandenergyexplorationthreatenthosethatremain.Ithasanareathe
sizeofNewJerseyinMadagascarthatisstillunderforest,andallthis
incrediblediversityiscrammedintoit.
Madagascarisaconservationhotspotatermforaregionthatisvery
biodiverseandparticularlythreatened—andwhilethatmakestheisland

Therehavebeenfiveextinctionwavesintheplanet'shistory-includingthe

petroleum.Petroleumisadark,stickyliquidmixtureofcompoundsformed
undergroundbythedecayofancientmarineanimals.
Naturalgasalsocomesfromthedecayofancientorganisms,butitnaturally
takesagaseousform,insteadofaliquidfrom.Naturalgascommonlyoccurs
inassociationwithcrudeoil.Itisderivedfrombothlandplantsandaquatic(水
