INTRODUCTION

ThePICMG3.3specificationisamemberofthePICMG3.xAdvancedTCATMseriesofspecifications.ThePICMG3.0basespecificationdefinesapoint-to-pointdifferentialpairserialLinkarchitecture.Itissufficientlygenericthatitcanaccommodatemanydifferentlink-levelstandards.PICMG3.3definestheuseofStarFabricwithinanAdvancedTCATMplatform.

StarFabricinterconnectprovidesasolutionforissuesthatnext-generationembeddedequipmentvendorsfacesuchasscalability,high-availability,quality-of-service,andcost.ItbalancesthebenefitsofflexibilityandtheneedtobecompatiblewithexistingPCIsoftware,driver,O/Sandhardwareinfrastructuresothatadopterscanmaintainexistinginvestmentswhilesolvingnext-generationchallenges.

ThePCIExpressBasespecificationwasratifiedbythePCISpecialInterestGroupinJuly,2002.AdditionalPCIExpressTMAddendumsincludingAdvancedSwitchingarenowbeingdeveloped.TheAdvancedSwitchingSpecificationbasedonthePCIExpressTMarchitecture,istargetedatenablingadditionalcommunicationscapabilities,includingagloballyflataddressablefabricusedtoenablestarandmeshtopologies,messagepassing,multicastandbroadcastcapabilities,aswellascongestionmanagementandtransportreliability.

TheStarFabricTradeAssociationdisclosedplanstoensureaseamlessevolutionfromtheStarFabricarchitecturetotheAdvancedSwitchingSpecificationbasedonthePCIExpressTMarchitecture.

StarFabricincorporatesmanyofthefeaturesandcapabilitiesoftheAdvancedSwitchingSpecificationandistargetedatprovidingaPCIcompatible,highlyscalable,switchedinterconnectsolutionforcommunicationapplications.Duetothiscloserelationship,thisspecificationalsoprovidesthecriteriaformigratingfromaPICMG3.3StarFabricbasedplatformtoaPICMG3.4PCIExpressTMplatformifsystemrequirementsdemandhigherbandwidth.

StarFabricincludesoptionalmanagementfeaturesthatcanaddtothereliability,availability,andperformanceofaStarFabricbasedAdvancedTCA?platform.Thesefeaturesincludethefollowing:

Performanceanalysis:EnablesmonitoringoftrafficonStarFabricLinksforexaminingperformanceanderrorstatistics.

Devicemanagement:ProvidesthecapabilitytodeterminethelocationandtypesofdevicesthatareinterconnectedthroughStarFabric.Afterthehardwareenumerationprocess,allthedevicesinterconnectedthroughthefabricareassignedanFID.UsingthisFIDidentifier,anyintelligentnodeinthesystemcanaccesstheCSRsofanyleaforrootnode.

In-bandmanagement:Providesamechanismforin-bandlowlevelsystemmanagementoperationsusingStarFabric.PICMG3.3enabledBoardsmayincludebridgingcapabilitybetweenIPMControllersandStarFabricinordertousethisfeature.

Introduction

EachAdvancedTCA?FabricChannelprovideseightdifferentialsignalpairsthatareusedforBoard-to-Boardcommunication.Upto16FabricChannelsareprovided,whicharedistributedaccordingtotherequirementsdetailedinSection6ofPICMG3.0.EachFabricChannelusestworowsofconnectionsinZone2.ThegenericpinmappingsareshowninFigure1.

StarFabricsupportsmultiplelanes.Alaneisdefinedasasetofdifferentialsignalpairs(onepairfortransmitandoneforreceive),whichissynonymouswiththePortdefinitioninPICMG3.0.TheChanneltypessupportedinPICMG3.3shallconsistofasinglePort,dualPorts,orquadPorts.TheseChanneloptionsareshowninTable4withtheirassociatedbitanddataratesineachdirectionofthefullduplexPort.Thedataratesaccountforthe8B/10BencodingsontheLinksaswellastheassociatedStarFabricprotocoloverhead.

PICMG3.3enabledBoardsshallsupportsingle,dualorquadPortChannelconfigurations.OtherPortconfigurationsarenotsupported.Table5showsthepinassignmentsforeachChannelconfigurationforoneFabricChannel.Table5assumesnouser-definedtechnologiesaremappedontheopenpins.

BoardsthatdonotimplementallfourPortsinaChannelanddonotmapuser-definedtechnologiesontheopenpinsshallterminatetheRXpairsoftheunusedPorts.TheRxsignalsshallbeterminatedwith100Ohmsacrossthepairs(e.g.Rx3+,Rx3-)whentheconnectorforthepairsispresent.

UnusedPorts(eitherStarFabricoruser-defined)forBoardsthatimplementtwoormoreChannelsofPICMG3.3shallbeterminated.RemainingChannels,notusedbythatBoard,arenotrequiredtobephysicallyimplemented.
