There are four general stages of cultural adjustment, and being aware of them helps you understand that culture shock wont last long. Its just a process you are going through rather than a constant situation. The first stage is usually referred to as “the honeymoon stage”. Upon arriving in a new environment, youll be interested in the new culture. Everything will seem thrilling and everyone will seem friendly and helpful. During this stage you are merely taking in these impressions passively. But it isnt long before the honeymoon stage gives way to the second stage “the withdrawal stage”. The excitement you felt before is gone and problems arise. The language is hard to learn, people are unusual and unpredictable, friends are hard to make, and simple things like shopping and going to the bank are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick, and you will probably find yourself plaining about the new culture or country. This is the stage called “culture shock”.At some point, if you can manage it well, youll begin the transition into the next stage, “the recovery stage”, in which youll feel more confident functioning in the new culture. Customs and traditions are clearer and easier to understand. At this stage, youll deal with new challenges with humor rather than anxiety.24. Which of the following doesnt belong to the second stage?A. Missing family. B. Making plaints.C. Feeling confident. D. Being upset.25. According to the passage, culture shock can be _. A. reduced by learning the language alone B. got rid of by learning just the custom C. avoided by knowing adjustment stages D. dealt with more easily for some people 26. “The honeymoon stage” here refers to _. A. the holiday for a newly-married couple B. the period of excitement C. the first month after the wedding D. the stage of adaptation 27. What would be probably discussed in the following paragraph?A. The 4th stage of cultural adjustment. B. Challenges in a new country. C. Results of culture shock. D. Preparations for a new culture. CWhen Yuan Jianglei graduated from college in 2014 in Southwest China with a degree in broadcast journalism, he decided to go to the West-African country of Benin to be a volunteer teacher. DScientists in Britain have managed to teach bees to pull strings to get to food and then pass on what they have learned to others in their group-showing a high level of intelligence despite their tiny brains. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London said the experiments, often used to test the intelligence of apes and birds, showed for the first time that some insects are up to the task, and can also pass skills on through several generations. The findings add to the evidence suggesting the ability for “culture spread” - the ability to learn and pass on knowledge and skills - may not be exclusive to humans. In the research, published in the journal PLOS Biology on Tuesday, the scientists were able to train 23 out of a group of 40 bees to pull strings with their legs and feet. The strings were attached to discs - or artificial “flowers” - containing food at their center but placed under a transparent screen. The bees, spotting the food beneath the screen, learned to pull the “flowers” out by pulling the string with their legs and feet to be able to get to it. From another group of bees given the chance to solve the task without any training, only two of 110 were successful. Another group of bees was then allowed to observe the trained bees pulling the strings, and 60 percent of them successfully learned the skill. Finally, trained bees were put in groups, and the scientists found the technique spread successfully to a majority of the groups worker bees. Lars Chittka, a Queen Mary University professor who guided the project, said the team is interested in figuring out the brain processes behind the bees learning and teaching skills.32. Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “exclusive” in Paragraph 3? A. appropriate. B. beneficial. C. widespread. D. unique. 33. What may the research team focus on next? A. What else bees can do. B. Where bees learn skills.C. How bees brain work. D. How bees teach others. 34. What did the researchers find about bees? A. Bees learn best in insects. B. Bees can be trained to learn skills.C. Bees are born good learners. D. Bees are as clever as birds. 35. What may be the best title for the text? A. Bees can learn and teach. B. Small bees, great abilities. C. Bees are smarter. D. You can open an email with flight offers and book whatever holds your attention at the time without having to consult or promise. 37 You dont have to worry about anxiety or mitments of others in your party. In fact, you could even choose to give up your seat on an overbooked flight and receive hundreds of dollars from the airline for doing so. Relationships develop. Frequently I am invited to join interesting people at their table for a meal when they realize that I am on my own. 38 You set the pace. I have learned to walk slowly and rest often. 39 They usually tend to rush. Last month, in Ronks, Pennsylvania, for example, I chose to take advantage of an outdoor Amish -made rocking chair so I could just rock and people watch for two hours. I loved it but know that not everyone would have felt the same way! You spend less money. At least I do because I know that I am the one who will have to drag my luggage around from place to place. 40 Finally, I enjoy the fact that there isnt anyone to correct my stories! A. There are several advantages for doing so.B. I have made amazing friendships and enjoyed great conversations on trips. C. Travelling is more flexible. D. Its a situation that does not match that of many other people.E. I also eat better when I am alone because I am not in restaurants three times a day. F.
