16、 nd arrived in America by ship in the seventeenth century. While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died, and after they Ian ded, their first win ter was worse tha n any En glish win ter. The local people, the Native America ns, taught the pion eers how to grow corn. The follow ing year th
17、ey celebrated together by eati ng a dinner of the new food.We still celebrate Thanksgiving today with a traditional dinner. Shes my hero because shes one of the best table tennis players in the world and I love play ing table tennis.Ms Li: Tell us about her.Daming: Well, she started play ing table tennis whe n she was five. 25、 he had to work very hard on his ownMy hero - Dr Norma n Beth uneBy Wang Lin gli ngNorma n Beth une is one of the most famous heroes in Chi na. He was a Can adia n doctor. He came to China to help the Chinese people and died for them.Norma n Beth une was born in 1890. He became a doctor in 1916 and
26、went to Spa in in 1936 to treat the wounded soldiers during the war there. He soon realised that many people were dying because they did not get to hospital quickly eno ugh. Dr Beth une developed new ways of tak ing care of the sick. He inven ted special medical tools to use outside hospitals and cl
27、ose to the fighti ng areas so that doctors could treat the wounded more quickly. His inventions saved many lives.In 1938, Dr Beth une came to China and helped treat the woun ded duri ng the An ti- Japa nese War. At that time, there were few doctors, so he had to work very hard on his own. His experi
28、e nee of treat ing people in Spain was useful in China. He developed training courses for local doctors and nu rses, and wrote books so that they could lear n about how he treated the sick.Dr Bethune often worked very hard without resting or taking care of himself. Once, he even worked for sixty-nin
29、e hours without stopp ing and man aged to save over a hun dred lives. One day in 1939, he cut his fin ger duri ng an operati on, but he continued his work without treat ing it. I n the end, he died of his wound.Dr Bethunes work for the Chinese people made him a hero in China. There are many books an
