An outline is a logical and general description, a schematic summary, an organizational pattern, and a visual and conceptual design of an essay. It reflects the authors logical thinking and the classifica

3、tion of his/her subject. Therefore, the purpose of making an outline is to assist the writer in the process of writing. This means that an outline can help the writer to organize his/her ideas, present the material in a logical form, show the relationship between ideas in writing, and construct an o

4、rderly overview of the essay. 2. Three essentials for making an outlineA. The purpose of the essay: what problems should be solved and what main idea should be answered in the Essay;B. The thesis statement: what topic and what main idea Should be presented in this essay;C. The audience: for whom is

5、this essay going to be Written. 4. A few rules for writing outlines:(1). Avoid single subdivisions. If there is a major point marked“” , there must be at least another marked “”; if there is an “A”, there must be a “B”, and so on.(2). Avoid mixing types. A topic outline is written in nounphrases, an

6、d a sentence outline in sentences. Do not mix these two types.(3). Use parallel structures for the headings of the same rank.Make sure subheads of like rank are of equal importance and are related to the heading and arranged in logical order.(4).
