This carnival organized by Claudia Jones from Trinidad and Tobago, who is widely recognised as the Mother of the Notting Hill Carnival, was a huge success, despite being held indoors. This was the first time that steelband music was played on any streets in England

4、and it united the minority population, who felt alienated from community celebration. It laid the foundations for the Notting Hill Carnival procession that we see today, which starts at Emslie Hornimans Pleasance and winds its way through the streets of Notting Hill on floats decked out with steel p

In recent years, the event has been muchfreer from serious trouble and is generallyviewed very positively by the authorities as adynamic celebration of Londons multi cultur-al diversity, though dominated by theCaribbean culture in the best traditions of Rio. Every year the streets of West London come alive, with the sounds and smells of Europes biggest street festival.
