3、s of the Important phrases and expressions of Text A1according to 用法 (1)按照,根據(jù)所說(shuō):I'll do it according to your instruction我會(huì)照你的指示做。Pan Gu,according to Chinese mythology,was the Creator of the world根據(jù)中國(guó)神話(huà)所說(shuō),盤(pán)古是開(kāi)天辟地的人。 (2)視而定:He will be punished according to the seriousness of his crime他應(yīng)受的懲罰視其犯罪程度而
4、定。 辨析according to,accordinga5 兩個(gè)短語(yǔ)都有“按照,依照”的意思,只是according as之后跟從句,如:You will be praised or blamed according as your work is good or bad你將依照你工作成績(jī)的好壞受到獎(jiǎng)懲。2be well off 用法 生活寬裕的,境遇好的:Although she is well off,she lives quite simply雖然家境富裕,她生活仍相當(dāng)簡(jiǎn)樸。3. be fond of 用法 很喜歡,很喜愛(ài):I'm very fond of ice cream我很
5、喜歡冰淇淋。She likes all her grandchildren,but she's especially fond of Peter她喜歡所有的孫子孫女,但特別 寵愛(ài)彼得。 4. be proud of 用法 為感到自豪:Tom is very proud of his new car湯姆為自己擁有一輛新汽車(chē)而感到自豪。 辨析 be proud of , be proud to do sth. be proud of為感到自豪;be proud to do sth自豪地做某事,如:He's too proud to be seen in public with hi
6、s poorly-dressed mother他太高傲了,甚至不愿意在公共場(chǎng)所讓人看見(jiàn)自己跟穿著破爛的母親在一起。 5.arrive at 用法 (1)到達(dá):She was always the first to arrive at workshop她總是第一個(gè)來(lái)到車(chē)間。 (2)達(dá)成,得出:After many hours of talk,the committee arrived at a decision委員會(huì)經(jīng)過(guò)幾個(gè)小時(shí)的商談作出了決定。 考點(diǎn) arrive at a conclusion得出結(jié)論:The scientist arrived at a conclusion after c
7、areful experimentation這位科學(xué)家經(jīng)過(guò)仔細(xì)實(shí)驗(yàn)后得出了一個(gè)結(jié)論。 辨析 arrive at , arrive in 指到達(dá)某一較小的地點(diǎn)時(shí)用arrive at,指到達(dá)某一較大的地點(diǎn)時(shí)用arrive in.6.be meant to do 用法 必須,不得不,應(yīng)該是:You're meant to take your shoes off when you enter an lndian temple當(dāng)你要進(jìn)入印度的寺廟時(shí),必須先脫掉鞋子。 擴(kuò)展 mean doing意味著,意思是,如:The sign means being not permitted to ente
8、r這個(gè)標(biāo)志的意思是不得人內(nèi)。mean to do打算,意欲,如:I didn't mean you to read the letter我本來(lái)打算不讓你讀這封信。 7in the long run 用法從長(zhǎng)遠(yuǎn)觀點(diǎn)來(lái)看,終究,最后:He will lose money in the long run他最終會(huì)輸錢(qián)。 III. Typical sentence patterns1If only 用法 要是就;但愿:I said something that made matters much worseIf only l had kept my mouth shut!我說(shuō)了一些使事情變得更糟
9、的話(huà),要是我當(dāng)時(shí)閉嘴就好了。If only l could be there and talk with the pop singer!要是我能在那兒和那位流行歌手交談就好了! 說(shuō)明 if only通常接虛擬語(yǔ)氣。表示與過(guò)去所發(fā)生的事相反的愿望時(shí),用過(guò)去完成時(shí);表示無(wú)法實(shí)現(xiàn)的愿望時(shí),用could或would加動(dòng)詞原形。如:If only she would marry me! 她要是愿意嫁給我就好了! 2 on the one hand, On the other hand 用法On the one hand一方面;On the other hand另一方面:On the one hand t
10、his job doesn't pay very much,but on the other hand l can't get another one從這方面來(lái)說(shuō)這個(gè)工作工資不高,但從另一方面來(lái)說(shuō)我也找不到另外的工作。 3as well as 用法 既也;不僅而且:I'm learning French as well as English,我在學(xué)法語(yǔ),也在學(xué)英語(yǔ)。 擴(kuò)展 as well也,又,同樣的,通常用在句尾,如:I'm going to Mexico, and John's going as well我要去墨西哥,約翰也去。IV. Difficu
11、lt sentences1if in (whatever it may be)wont compute and you cant drink it , smoke it or spend it ,then“it”holds little value(Para3)譯文 學(xué)生們認(rèn)為如果某種東西(不管它是何物)沒(méi)有實(shí)際的經(jīng)濟(jì)意義,你不能把它當(dāng)酒喝、當(dāng)煙抽、當(dāng)錢(qián)花,那么“它”就簡(jiǎn)直毫無(wú)價(jià)值。說(shuō)明 (1)compute意為“計(jì)算”,在本句中意思是“以錢(qián)計(jì)算”。這類(lèi)詞通常采取主動(dòng)形式,但意思是被動(dòng)的,如:The book translates well 這本書(shū)很好翻譯(這本書(shū)被翻譯得很好)。The mat
12、erial washes easily.這種衣料容易洗滌。 (2)little意為“幾乎沒(méi)有”(表示否定),如:I have very little money left我?guī)缀鯖](méi)剩多少錢(qián)。A little意為“一點(diǎn)點(diǎn),少許”(表示肯定),如:I have a little money left我只剩一點(diǎn)點(diǎn)錢(qián)了。 2Interest in teaching,social service and the humanities is at a low along with ethnic and women's studies(Para6) 譯文 如今人們對(duì)當(dāng)教師、社會(huì)服務(wù)和人文學(xué)科以及種族和
13、婦女研究的興趣都處于低潮。 說(shuō)明 (1)humanities人文學(xué)科(如文學(xué)、語(yǔ)言、歷史等) (2)at a low處于低水平,如:The price of gold on the London market is at a low now倫敦市場(chǎng)上的黃金現(xiàn)正處于最低價(jià)。試比較:at lowest 至少,最低。It will cost a hundred pounds at very lowest這至少要花100英鎊。 (3)along with與一起;加上,如:He may come along with the other guests他也許和其他客人一道來(lái)。This along with
14、 the other income,will see him though這筆錢(qián),加上其他收入,可以使他渡過(guò)難關(guān)。3. 18、)指引一條路。 6And we are better for our understanding of these other contributions be they scientific or artistic. 19、g,she will have my strong support可以寫(xiě)成:Be she right or wrong,she will have my strong support不管她是對(duì)還是錯(cuò),我都全力支持她。7.Weekly we read of unions that went on strike for higher wages, only to drive their employer out of business. No company, no job. (Para15) 譯文 我們每周都在報(bào)紙上讀到,工會(huì)在為要求更高的工資而罷工,結(jié)果卻只是使他們的老板破了產(chǎn)。沒(méi)有了 公司,
20、也就沒(méi)有了工作崗位。 說(shuō)明 (1)read of通過(guò)閱讀發(fā)現(xiàn),如:I once read of this place in one of the books piled here我在這堆書(shū)中讀到過(guò)這個(gè)地方。 (2)to drive不定式做目的狀語(yǔ)。 (3)No company,no job.是一種口語(yǔ)化的表達(dá)方式,使得文章簡(jiǎn)練生動(dòng)。如:No pain,no gain。一分耕耘,一分收獲。 8.But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the ages, we improve our moral sense. (Para16) 譯文 但是贊成寬泛教育的最重要的理由是,在學(xué)習(xí)世世代代積累起來(lái)的知識(shí)的同時(shí),我們也提高了自己的道德感。說(shuō)明 argument在句子中的意思是“理由,論據(jù)”,如:The managers will declare their arguments against the plan next week經(jīng)理們將在下周宣布他們反對(duì)這項(xiàng)計(jì)劃的理由。該詞的其他意思還有“據(jù)理而定,說(shuō)理”,如:We should t
