Her 20-year athletic career includes five national titles and a World Record. An automobile accident in 1979 rendered her unable to train physically for her third Olym
4、pic Team. Using only mental training techniques she placed second at the Olympic trials for the 1980 Moscow Games. This extraordinary experience launched her exploration into the field of exceptional human performance. Her discovery of the three elements that are always present when ordinary people

Text A Olympic GamesThe modern Olympic Games is the leading international sporting event featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games a
6、re considered to be the worlds foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The Olympic Games are held every four years with the Summer and Winter Games alternating, meaning they each occur every four years but two years apart.Womens pentathlonThe womens pentathlon was conte
7、sted in the Olympics from 1964 until 1980, and it was replaced in the 1984 Summer Olympics with the heptathlon. The event was contested in the European Athletics Championships from 1950 to 1978. However, it has never been contested at the IAAF World Championships in Athleticssince that competitions
8、inception in 1983, the heptathlon has always been contested.Womens pentathlon had a different set of events than the ancient Olympic pentathlon. The events were shot put, high jump, a hurdling race, sprint and long jump. Pentathlon is sometimes contested instead of heptathlon even today because of f
9、acility limitations. Indoor arenas are incapable of hosting events such as the javelin throw. The events in indoor pentathlon are 60 metre hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800 metres. 14、ragedy of the Israeli athletes and an injury to my ankle combined to make the experience a deeply discouraging one. I didnt quit; instead I kept training, eventually qualifying to go with the U.S. team to Montreal for the 1976 Games. The experience was much more joyous, and I was thrilled to place t
15、hirteenth. But still, I felt I could do better.Para.3a I arranged to take a leave of absence from my college coaching job the year before the 1980 Olympics. I that twelve months of “twenty-four-hour-a-day training” would give me the edge I needed to bring home a medal this time. HCHIText A figuredPa

I felt the exhilaration that comes with single-minded focus and steady progress towards a cherished goal. CHIHText A CHIHText A Para.4 But then in November, what appeared to be an insurmoun
17、table obstacle occurred. I was in a car accident and injured my lower back. The doctors werent sure exactly what was wrong, but I had to stop training because I couldnt move without experiencing excruciating pain. It seemed all too obvious that I would have to give up my dream of going to the Olympi
18、cs if I couldnt keep training. Everyone felt so sorry for me. Everyone but me.CHIHText A Para.5 It was strange, but I never believed this setback would stop me. I trusted that the doctors and physical therapists would get it handled soon, and I would get back to training. I the affirmation: Im getti

It went through my head constantly.held on toPara.6 But my progress was slow, and the doctors couldnt agree on a course of treatment. Time was passing, and I was still in pain, unable to move. With only a few months remaini
20、ng, I had to do something or I knew I would never make it. So I started training the only way I could in my head. 21、record holders in all five of my events. Sitting in a kitchen chair, I watched the films projected on my kitchen wall over and over.
