1、PART1 Since World War II, computer scientists have tried to develop techniques that would allow computers to act more like humans. The entire research effort, including decision-making systems, robotic devices (Fig.22-1), and various approaches to computer speech, is usually called artificial intell
2、igence (AI). An ultimate goal of AI research is to develop a computer system that can learn concepts (ideas) as well as facts, make commonsense decisions, and do some planning. In other words, the goal is to eventually create a thinking, learning computer. A computer program is a set of instructions
3、 that enables a computer to process information and solve problems. Most programs are fairly rigidthey tell the computer exactly what to do, step by step. AI programs are, however, exceptions to this rule. They can take short-cuts, make choices, search for and try out different solutions, and change

Detailed instructions on what moves to make and how to respond to an opponents moves were written into a program. Sometimes the suggestions of several chess experts were included
