7、ual limb. In contrast to current models, which are electrically powered, the new prosthetic hand is powered by a compressed air pump. This reduces its weight below 300 gramshalf that of some current models.The hand uses similar signal processing algorithms (算法)to other prosthetics on the market. The
8、 big advance is that it does not require invasive surgery or electronic implants into the residual limb to communicate with the users brain. Sensors on the skin record electrical signals from the remaining arm muscles. The signals then are interpreted by pattern recognition software that sends appro
9、priate commands to the pump to move the artificial hand. Meanwhile, other signals travel in the opposite direction from sensors in the hands fingertips to nerves in the arm, from which they are relayed to the brain and provide a sense of touch. The result is something which responds like a hand and
10、feels like one to the user.Dr Gu and his colleagues compared the efficacy of their invention with that of existing models using tests borrowed from research into strokes and spinal cord injuries. These included writing, grasping and lifting objects, and lifting food to the mouth. Normally, they foun
11、d it worked betterparticularly for delicate tasks like handling fragile objects, petting a cat and shaking hands.The other advantage of Dr Gu and his colleagues invention is that it is cheap. If the wound is too dry, the tissue can become dry; if the wound is too wet, it can become white and wrinkly. However, if a d
19、octor wants to check the moisture levels of a wound ,then he or she needs to remove the bandage, potentially damaging the delicate hea ling tissue. These issues have inspired this latest smart bandage.The choice of materials was a challenge, so researchers applied a special material onto a gauze (紗布
20、)using a technique called screen printing, and then connected the gauze with commercially available bandage materials. The idea is that changes in the moisture levels of the wound cause a change in an electronic signal measured by the sensor.To test their bandages, the researchers exposed them to ar
21、tificial wound liquid, a nd also tested different bandage materials and shapes. They found that the bandage wa s highly sensitive, providing different readings in different conditions, suggesting it co uld be a valuable tool in wound management.“We developed a range of bandages with various layers a
