TheEuropeanUnion,unliketheUnitedStates,strictlyrestrictstheplantingofgeneticallymodifiedcrops.Takecornforexample,theMON810cornistheonlygmcropapprovedforcommercialcultivationintheEU,butitsplantingareaonlyaccountsfor1ofthetotalplantingareaofEUcorn.56%,limitedtoafewEUcountries

Intermsofconsumerawarenessandattitudes,70%ofpeopleintheEUsaytheydonotwanttoeatgeneticallymodifiedfood,andtheyareverysensitiveaboutthesafetyofgeneticallymodifiedfood.ButtherehavealsobeenstudiesshowingthatasmallnumberofEUconsumersarewillingtobuygmproducts5-EuropeanUnion

5-In2016,about20.95milliontonsofsoybeanmealand13milliontonsofsoybeanmealwereimportedintotheEU,whichisthesecondlargestsoybeanandsoybeanproductimportmarketintheworld

ItisalsoworthmentioningthattheEUlabelingsystemandtraceabilityregulationsstipulatethatthethresholdofgmfoodsafetyis0.9%,thatis,thecontentofgeneticallymodifiedingredientsinfoodisUnder0.9%donotattachlabels;ThetraceabilityregulationstipulatesthataGMFlabelingsystemshouldbeestablishedsothateachgmorganismhasauniqueidentificationcode.Boththeproducerandthedealermustestablishinformationfiles,thusformingasystemthatcanstrictlytrackthegmfooddestination.6-6-

Brazilian

Since2003,whentheBraziliangovernmentofficiallyapprovedgmsoybean,theplantingareaofgmcropshasbeenincreasingyearbyyear,becomingthecountrywiththefastestgrowingareaofgmcrops.Atpresent,Brazilhasbecometheworld'ssecondlargestgmcropplantingareaandsoybeanexportcountry.Foodswithmorethan1%gmcontentmusthavewarninglabelsontheirlabels7-7-Japan

Japanhasnotyetapprovedthecommercialplantingofgmcropsinitsterritory,buttherearealargenumberofimportedgmagriculturalproducts,including8kindsofpotatoes,12kindsofsoybeansand181kindsofcorn.Oftheroughly30milliontonsofgrainimportedintoJapan,about17milliontonsaregeneticallymodifiedcrops.

Regardingthelabelingsystem,Japanadoptsquantitativepartialmandatorylabeling,thatis,itisnecessarytolabelcertaincategoriesofproductsaslongasthecontentofgmingredientsexceedsthethreshold.Forexample,Japansetsathresholdof5%forgmlabelingof24kindsoffoodsmadefromsoybeanorcorn,suchastofu,cornsnacksandnatto.8-8-

ChinaTheplantingareaofgmcropsinChinaisabout2.79millionhm2,rankingeighthintheworld.ThemaincropisBttransgeniccotton,andtheplantingareais2.78millionhm2.Bytheendof2012,theplantingrateofgmcottoninChinahadreached95%,andthatofmajorcotton-plantingprovincessuchashebei,shandong,henanandanhuihadreached100%.In2014,Chinaimported70.17milliontonsofgmsoybeansandover56milliontonsofgmsoybeanmeal.9-9-

ProductionandoperationofGMFSshallbemarkedprominentlyaccordingtoregulations,failingtolabelGMFSaccordingtoregulations,andshallbefinedupto5timesorlessthan10timesthevalueofthegoods,andinseriouscasesshallbeorderedtosuspendproductionorbusinessoperationsorevenrevokethelicense10-10-

Theprevailingattitudeinacademiaisneutral.TheattitudeoftheChinesegovernmentismainlyneutralandpositive.Themostimportantsourceforthepublictoknowaboutgminformationisthenewsmedia.Therefore,thepublic'sawarenessandattitudetowardsgmdependslargelyonthemedia'scoverage.11-11-Accordingtothesurvey,only18.3%ofrespondentsarewillingtoacceptgmfood.

Thegeneticallymodifiedfoodthatrespondentsweremostreceptivetowasdisease-resistantfruitsorvegetables.

21.26%ofrespondentschosetosupportthedevelopmentofgmfood.

15.47%ofrespondentsapproveofthecommercialapplicationofgmfood.
