ndOfEducation(1644).Helosthissightintheyearof1651,andthereafterdictatedhisworks.Hisdisastrousfirstmarriageendedwithhiswife'sdeathin1652;twolatermarriagesweremoresuccessful.AftertheRestorationhewasarrestedasanoteddefenderoftheCommonwealth,butwassoonreleased.InParadise(1667),hisepicmasterpieceontheFallofManwritteninblankverse,heuseshissublime“grandstyle"withsuperbpower;hischaracterizationofSatanisasupremeachievement.HefurtherexpressedhispurifiedfaithinGodandtheregenerativestrengthoftheindividualsoulinParadiseRegained\anepicinwhichChristovercomesSatanthetempter,andSamsonAgonistes(1671),atragedyinwhichtheOldTestamentfigureconquersself-pityanddespairtobecomeGod*schampion.ConsideredsecondonlytoW.ShakespeareinthehistoryofEnglish-languagepoetry,Miltonhadanimmenseinfluenceonlaterliterature;thoughattackedearlyinthe20thcentury,hehadregainedhisplaceintheWesterncanonbymid-century.WilliamWordsworth:Englishpoet(1770一!850).Orphanedat13,WordsworthattendedCambridgeUniv.,butremainedrootlessandvirtuallypennilessuntil1795,whenalegacymadepossibleareunionwithhissisterD.Wordsworth.HebecamefriendswithS.T.Coleridge,withwhomhewroteLyricalBallads(1798),thecollectionoftenconsideredtohavelaunchedtheEnglishRomanticMovement.Wordsworth*scontributionsincludeヵinternAbbey"andmanylyricscontroversialfbrtheircommon,everydaylanguage.Around1798hebeganwritingtheepicautobiographicalpoemthatwouldabsorbhimintermittentlyfbrthenext40years,ThePrelude[\S50).Hissecondversecollection,Poems,inTwoVolumes(1807),includesmanyoftherestofhisfinestworks,includingOde:IntimationsofImmortality.Hispoetryisperhapsmostoriginalinitsvisionofthealmostdivinepowerofthecreativeimaginationreforgingthelinksbetweenmanandman,betweenhumankindandthenaturalworld.Themostmemorablepoemsofhismiddleandlateyearswereoftencastinelegiacmode;fewmatchthebestofhisearlierworks.Bythetimehebecamewidelyappreciatedbythecriticsandthepublic,hispoetryhadlostmuchofitsforceandhisradicalpoliticshadyieldedtoconservatism.In1843hebecameEngland'spoetlaureate.HeisregardedasthecentralfigureintheinitiationofEnglishRomanticism.TextStructureAnalysisThepassagefocusesonasocialphenomenon choosingtobealoneonpurpose.IntheU.S.,about22millionpeoplelivealoneforvariousreasons.Whilesomepeoplethinkoflonelinessasasortofnationaldisease,otherstakeitasacharacteristicofanAmericanhero.Somegreatpoetsandphilosophersinthepastlivedinsolitudeforinspiration,suchasWilliamWordsworth,JohnMiltonandHenryDavidThoreau.However,solitudeishardforpeoplebecausetheneedtotalkismorebasicthantheneedtolisten.Soifonelivesinsolitude,heshouldstayrationalandsettledowntoenjoygraceandpleasure.Thepassagecanbebroadlydividedintofivemainparts:thephenomenonoflivingalone;whatpeoplethinkoflivingalone;whopreferslivingalone;thelifeofthesolitarypeople;andwhatthewriteradvisesfbrlivingalone.Part1(Para.1):thefirstpartconsistsofsingleparagraph,whichtellsusthatliving
