ChristopherColumbusChristopherColumbuswasborninGenoa,Italy.Heworkedasaseamanandthenasailingentrepreneur.EducatedEuropeansofColumbus’daybelievedthattheworldwasround.However,Columbusandmostothers,underestimatedtheworld’ssize.TheycalculatedthatEastAsiamustliecloselywhereNorthAmericansitsontheearth.TheydidnotyetknowthatthePacificOceanexisted.Columbusbrokewithtraditionin1492,sailingwestinordertofindashorterroutetoIndiaandChina.HewasthefirstEuropeantoexploretheAmericassincetheVikingssetupcoloniesinGreenlandandNewfoundlandinthe10thcentury.HeexploredtheWestIndies,southAmerica,andCentralAmerica.OnMay20,1506,thegreatItalianexplorerChristopherColumbusdiedinSpain.Between1405and1433,ZhengHehad,overaperiodof28years,eighttimesbeenorderedtoactasenvoytocountrieslyingtothewestofChina.Eachtimehehadunderhiscommandabigfleetandastaffofmorethan20,000men.HisfleetshadsailedintheSouthChinaSeaandtheIndianOcean.TheyhadgonefurthersouthtoJavaintoday'sIndonesia.Sailingtheninanorthwestdirection,theyhadvisitedYemen,IranandtheHolyCityofIslamMeccaandfurtherwesttotoday'sSomaliainEastAfrica.Inall,hehadmadecallsatmorethan30countriesandterritories.AllthishadtakenplaceabouthalfacenturybeforethefamousEuropeansailorColumbus'svoyagetoAmerica.Forthisreason,ZhenHe'sexpeditionscouldrightfullybecalled"anunprecedentedfeatinthehistoryofnavigationofmankind."
