mendations,ofwhichthe?rstisimposingataxof20percentonsugarydrinksforatleastayear,ontopoftheexisting20percentvalue-addedtax.Thatatleastwouldbeanexcellentstart.Theamountsofsugarinsoftdrinksarehorrifying,andturnstraighttofat.AsProfessorTerenceStephenson,headoftheAMRC,hassaid,sugarysoftdrinksare“theultimatebadfood.Youarejustconsumingneatsugar.Yourbodydidn’tevolvetohandlethiskindofthing.”Precisely.Therisksofeatingtoomuchfatorsalt(whichareverydifferent)paleintoinsignificancecomparedwiththeharmdonebysugar.Anditiseverywhere.Itisdif?culttobuyanythinginasupermarket,otherthanin,unpreparedmeat,?shorvegetables,thatdoesn’thavealargeamountofsugarinit.Thishascomeaboutbecausetheprevailingscienti?cviewsofthe1960sand1970signoredtheevidenceaboutsugar,andinsteadsawfatasthereallyseriousrisk,bothtotheheartandotherorgans,aswellasthecauseofobesity.Thefashionwastoavoidfat.But?ndingthatfoodwithmuchofitsfatremovedisnotveryfoodproducersturnedtosugarasamagicalternative?avourenhancer,oftenintheformsofsyrups(糖炙)thathadrecentlybeendevelopedfromcorn,andputitgenerouslyintomostpreparedfoodsandsoftThisstuffisnotjustfattening.Itisaddictive.Itinterfereswiththebody’smetabolism,possiblyviatheactivityofanappetite-controllinghormone.There’splentyofevidenceforthis,forthosewhowillacceptthetruth.Theoretically,peopleoughttomake“healthychoices”andavoidovereating.Butsugaradditivesarenoteasytoidentifyandarehardtoavoid.Sothesnacking,over-drinkingandover-eatingthatmakespeoplefatisnotreallytheirownfault:obesityisinlargepartsomethingthatisbeingdonetothem.Itshouldbestopped,orrathertheernmentshouldstopit.Goingroundmylocalsupermarket,Iamconstantlyastonishedthatitisstilllegaltosellallthepoisonsstackedhighontheshelves.Theproblemisthattheyareworsethanuseless.Theyarepoisonous.Theyareknowntobeaddictive.Theyareknowntomakepeopleobese.Andgivingsmallchildrensweetdrinksorbottlesoffakejuicealldaylongisnothinglessthanchildabuse.Clearly,thesaleofsuchstuffoughttobeillegal.Ihatetothinkofyetmoreernmentregulation.Butabitoftaxonsweetsodaandalittlemorehealtheducation,abitofcookinginschoolsandbanningvendingmachines(自動(dòng)售貨機(jī))hereandthere—assuggestedbytheAMRCreport—isnotgoingtoachieveverymuch.Labellingisquiteinadequate.WhatisneededislegislationbanninghighlevelssugarysyrupsusedinfoodsandInJune2012,thethenministerforpublichealthsaidtheernmentwasnotscaredofthefoodindustryandhadnotruledoutlegislation,becauseofthecostsofobesitytotheNHS.However,nothinghashappenedyet.WhynothaveanotherJammieDodgerbiscuitandforgetaboutit.Avoidingover-consumptionofsugarcanimprovepeople’shealthaswellassavemedicalLawsshouldbepassedtomakeitillegaltoproduceoverlysweetfoodsorGivingsmallchildrensweetjuicestodrinkallthetimeisequaltochildLookingaround,theauthorfoundobesityquiteThenumberofobesepeopleisexpectedtoincreasequicklyinthenextfewIfpeoplereallyunderstoodthehorribleconsequencesofsugaryfoodsanddrinks,theywouldsupporternmentmeasuresagainstsugarconsumption.Itwouldbeaverygoodbeginningtoimposeanadditionaltaxonsugary
