Thefroganswered,“Idonotcareforthyclothes,thypearlsandjewels,orthygoldencrown,butifthouwiltlovemeandletmebethycompanionandplay-fellow,andsitbytheeatthylittletable,andeatoffthylittlegoldenplate,anddrinkoutofthylittlecup,andsleepinthylittlebed—ifthouwillpromisemethisIwillgodownbelow,andbringtheethygoldenballupagain.”“Oh,yes,”saidshe,“Ipromisetheeallthouwishest,ifthouwiltbringmemyballbackagain.”She,however,thought,“Howthesillyfrogdoestalk!Helivesinthewaterwiththeotherfrogs,andcroaks,andcanbenocompaniontoanyhumanbeing!”Butthefrogwhenhehadreceivedthispromise,puthisheadintothewaterandsankdown,andinashorttimecameswimmingupagainwiththeballinhismouth,andthrewitonthegrass.TheKing’sdaughterwasdelightedtoseeherprettyplaythingoncemore,andpickeditup,andranawaywithit.“Wait,wait,”saidthefrog.“Takemewiththee.Ican’trunasthoucanst.”Butwhatdiditavailhimtoscreamhiscroak,croak,afterher,asloudlyashecould?Shedidnotlistentoit,butranhomeandsoonforgotthepoorfrog,whowasforcedtogobackintohiswellagain.ThenextdaywhenshehadseatedherselfattablewiththeKingandallthecourtiers,andwaseatingfromherlittlegoldenplate,

somethingcamecreepingsplishsplash,splishsplash,upthemarblestaircase,andwhenithadgottothetop,itknockedatthedoorandcried,“Princess,youngestprincess,openthedoorforme.”Sherantoseewhowasoutside,butwhensheopenedthedoor,theresatthefroginfrontofit.Thensheslammedthedoorto,ingreathaste,satdowntodinneragain,andwasquitefrightened.TheKingsawplainlythatherheartwasbeatingviolently,andsaid,“Mychild,whatartthousoafraidof?Isthereperchanceagiantoutsidewhowantstocarrytheeaway?”“Ah,no,”repliedshe,“itisnogiant,butadisgustingfrog.”“Whatdoesafrogwantwiththee?”“Ah,defather,yesterdaywhenIwasintheforestsittingbythewell,playing,mygoldenballfellintothewater.AndbecauseIcriedsothefrogbroughtitoutagainforme,andbecauseheinsistedsoonit,Ipromisedhimheshouldbemycompanion,butIneverthoughthewouldbeabletocomeoutofhiswater!Andnowheisoutsidethere,andwantstocomeintome.”Inthemeantimeitknockedasecondtime,andcried,“Princess,youngestprincess!Openthedoorforme!DothounotknowwhatthousaidsttomeYesterdaybythecoolwatersofthefountain?

Princess,youngestprincess!Openthedoorforme!”ThensaidtheKing,“Thatwhichthouhastpromisedmustthouperform.Goandlethimin.”Shewentandopenedthedoor,andthefroghoppedinandfollowedher,stepbystep,toherchair.Therehesatandcried,“Liftmeupbesidethee.”Shedelayed,untilatlasttheKingcommandedhertodoit.Whenthefrogwasonthechairhewantedtobeonthetable,andwhenhewasonthetablehesaid,“Now,pushthylittlegoldenplatenearertomethatwemayeattogether.”Shedidthis,butitwaseasytoseethatshedidnotdoitwillingly.Thefrogenjoyedwhatheate,butalmosteverymouthfulshetookchokedher.Atlengthhesaid,“Ihaveeatenandamsatisfied;nowIamtired,carrymeintothylittleroomandmakethylittlesilkenbedready,andwewillbothliedownandgotosleep.”TheKing’sdaughterbegantocry,forshewasafraidofthecoldfrogwhichshedidnotliketotouch,andwhichwasnowtosleepinherpretty,cleanlittlebed.ButtheKinggrewangryandsaid,“Hewhohelpedtheewhenthouwertintroubleoughtnotafterwardstobedespisedbythee.”Soshetookholdofthefrogwithtwofingers,carriedhimupstairs,andputhiminacorner.Butwhenshewasinbedhecrepttoherandsaid,“Iamtired,
