BriefIntroduction**Name:

CalledWaitan(外灘）byChinese,meansWaterfront.Butsincecolonialtimes,thispremiermilewasoriginallynamedbytheBritishas“Bund”.“Bund”derivesfromAnglo-Indianwordforanembankmentalongamuddywaterfrontandtodaythistermstillsurvives.在一百五十年前，上海僅是江南沿海的一個中等縣城，航運事業(yè)很不發(fā)達，人們沒必要，也沒能力在沿江修筑堤岸，所以除東門黃浦江岸外大部分江岸是一片自然灘地，退潮時，江水聚滯在河床中心，露出一大片灘地，漲潮時，江水又沒過河灘。黃浦江是上海的主要河道，由于江寬水急，逆水而行的船只就須拉纖行走。幾百年來，纖夫的足跡就在黃浦江灘踩出一條曲折多彎的小道，人們稱之“纖道”，這纖道就是外灘最早的路了。在上海的地名習慣用詞中，一般把河流的上游叫作“里”，河流的下游叫作“外”，今蘇州河入黃浦江口的第一座橋叫作“外白渡橋”，依次向里的橋也俗稱“里白渡橋”（今乍浦路橋）、三白渡橋（今四川路橋）。進入上海縣城附近的黃浦江在陸家浜出口處形成一個急彎，于是上海人就以陸家浜為界，其上游稱為“里黃浦”，下游稱為‘外黃浦”。里黃浦的河灘叫作“里黃浦灘”，又稱“里灘”，外黃浦的灘地就叫作“外黃浦灘”，又稱“黃浦灘”或“外灘”。清康熙二十二年，清軍收復了臺灣，二十四年（168年），康熙皇帝頒布了《馳海禁令》，即放松和放寬了從明初開始實行的禁止近海航運和貿(mào)易的“海禁”政策，中國近海航運和貿(mào)易又開始活躍起來了。位于中國南北海岸線中點的上海，是長江的出海日，又背倚中國最富庶的杭嘉湖平原，很快成為中國沿海的重要港口，與上?？h城小東門、大東門、小南門相近的黃浦江灘相繼建起了碼頭、堆棧、商行，從而促進了上海的城市經(jīng)濟和建設(shè)的發(fā)展。大概在康熙四十年后，從陸家浜到方浜（今方浜路）的黃浦江灘地逐漸消失在不斷興建的各種建筑中，從此，‘外灘”的實際區(qū)域就是今方浜路到蘇州河邊的黃浦江岸。
