ThanksgivingisAmerica'spreeminentday.ItiscelebratedeveryyearonthefourthThursdayinthemonthofNovember.Ithasaveryinterestinghistory.Itsorigincanbetracedbacktothe16thcenturywhenthefirstthanksgivingdinnerissaidtohavetakenplaceThelegendarypilgrims,crossedtheAtlanticintheyear1620inMayflower-A17thCenturysailingvessel.About102peopletraveledfornearlytwomonthswithextremedifficulty.ThepilgrimsreachedPlymouthrockonDecember11th1620,afteraseajourneyof66days.ThoughtheoriginaldestinationwassomewhereinthenorthernpartofVirginia,theycouldnotreachtheplaceowingtowindsblowingthemoffcourse.Nearly46pilgrimsdiedduetoextremecoldinwinter.However,inthespringof1621,Squanto,anativeIndiantaughtthepilgrimstosurvivebygrowingfood.Inthesummerof1621,owingtoseveredrought,pilgrimscalledforadayoffastingandprayertopleaseGodandaskforabountifulharvestinthecomingseason.Godansweredtheirprayersanditrainedattheendoftheday.ItsavedthecorncropsItissaidthatPilgrimslearnttogrowcorn,beansandpumpkinsfromtheIndians,whichhelpedallofthemsurvive.Intheautumnof1621,theyheldagrandcelebrationwhere90peoplewereinvitedincludingIndians.Thegrandfeastwasorganizedtothankgodforhisfavors.“Mayflower”CelebrationItistraditionalforfamiliesandgroupsoffriendstogettogetherforalargemeal.Thisoftenconsistsofaturkey,stuffing,differenttypesofpotatoes,cranberrysauce（蔓越橘醬）,gravyandmaizeandotherseasonalvegetables.Themealalsooftenincludespumpkinpie.ManyofthesefoodsarenativetotheAmericasandwerenotavailableinEuropeatthetimeofthefirstsettlers.Thisaddstotheirsymbolismofgivingthanksforagoodharvestinanewcountry.ThanksgivingDayparadesareheldinsomecitiesandtownsonoraroundThanksgivingDay.SomeparadesorfestivitiesalsomarktheopeningoftheChristmasshoppingseason.Manyfootballgamesareplayedandwatchingthemisapopularactivity.Somepeoplehaveafour-dayweekendsoitisapopulartimefortripsoutoftownandtovisitfriendsandfamily.
