Theproductionofhigh-qualityfuelsiscriticaltothemodernworld'senergyneeds.However,theincreasingdemandforfuelsandthedepletionofoilresourceshaveledresearcherstoexplorenewandefficientwaystoproducethem.Isomerizationofn-hexane,asix-carbonlinearalkane,isonesuchmethodthathasreceivedextensiveresearchinterestinrecentyears.Theprocessproducesbranchedisomersofn-hexane,whichhavehigheroctanenumbersand,hence,betterfuelproperties.
Isomerizationofn-hexanehastraditionallybeenachievedthroughthermalcrackingoracid-catalyzedprocesses.However,thesemethodshaveseverallimitations,suchashighenergyconsumption,lowselectivity,andcorrosionofequipment,amongothers.Thedevelopmentofhighlyselectivecatalystsforn-hexaneisomerizationhas,therefore,beenasignificantresearchfocus.
Onesuchcatalystisthemolybdenumoxide(MoOx)catalystmodifiedwithothermetalssuchascobalt,nickel,andtin,amongothers,toformMoOxCy(Crepresentsametal)catalysts.Thesecatalystsexhibithighactivityandselectivityintheisomerizationofn-hexaneundermoderateconditions,suchaslowtemperaturesandpressures.
Theprimarygoalofthispaperistoreviewandanalyzetherecentresearchprogressonn-hexaneisomerizationusingMoOxCycatalysts.Thispaperaimstoprovideacomprehensiveunderstandingofthemolecularstructureandpropertiesofn-hexaneanditsisomers.ItwillalsoassessthemechanismoftheisomerizationreactionandthepropertiesofMoOxCycatalysts,whichmakethemhighlyefficientintheisomerizationreaction.
Inconclusion,thedevelopmentofhighlyefficientcatalystsforn-hexaneisomerizationisvitaltoimprovingfuelqualityandreducingenvironmentalpollution.TheuseofMoOxCycatalystsholdsgreatpromiseinachievinghighlyefficientisomerizationofn-hexane.Thispaperprovidesanoverviewofrecentresearchonthesubjectandsuggestsfutureresearchdirections.II.MolecularStructureandPropertiesofn-HexaneanditsIsomers
n-Hexane,alsoknownasC6H14,isasix-carbonlinearalkanewithaboilingpointof69.2°C.Itisacolorlessliquidwithafaintodorandissolubleinmostorganicsolvents.Theboilingpointofn-hexaneisrelativelylowcomparedtoitsisomers,whichmakesitlessfavorableasafuel.
Theisomersofn-hexanearebranchedmoleculeswiththesamechemicalformula.Theydifferfromn-hexaneregardingthearrangementofcarbonatoms,whichleadstodifferentphysicalandchemicalproperties.Themostcommonisomersofn-hexaneare2-methylpentane,3-methylpentane,and2,3-dimethylbutane.
2-methylpentaneisanisomerofn-hexanewithaboilingpointof60.3°C.Ithasabranchedchainstructurewithamethylgroupattachedtothesecondcarbonatom.Itspropertiesmakeitasuitablefuelbecauseithasahigheroctanenumberand,hence,burnsmoreefficiently.

2,3-dimethylbutaneisabranchedisomerofn-hexanewithaboilingpointof58.5°C.Ithastwomethylgroupsseparatedbyacarbonatom,leadingtoabranchedchainstructure.Itisusedasafuelbecauseofitshighoctanerating,whichmakesitsuitableforuseingasoline.

LubricantProduction:
Isomersofn-hexaneareusedasrawmaterialsintheproductionoflubricants.Themostcommonisomerusedforthispurposeis2,3-dimethylbutane,whichisproducedthroughcatalyticisomerizationofn-hexane.Thebranchedstructureofthisisomerprovidesitwithbetterlubricityandthermalstabilitycomparedtolinearhydrocarbons.
FuelProduction:
