Subsequently,theMayDayRiotsof1894occurred.In1904,theInternationalSocialistConferencemeetinginAmsterdamcalledonallSocialDemocraticPartyorganizationsandtradeunionsofallcountriestodemonstrateenergeticallyonMayFirstforthelegalestablishmentofthe8-hourday,fortheclassdemandsoftheproletariat,andforuniversalpeace.ThecongressmadeitmandatoryupontheproletarianorganizationsofallcountriestostopworkonMay1,whereveritispossiblewithoutinjurytotheworkers.

Inmanycountries,theworkingclassessoughttomakeMayDayanofficialholiday,andtheireffortslargelysucceeded.MayDayhaslongbeenafocalpointfordemonstrationsbyvarioussocialist,communistandanarchistgroups.Insomecircles,bonfiresarelitincommemorationoftheHaymarketmartyrs,usuallyatdawn.MayDayhasbeenanimportantofficialholidayincountriessuchasthePeoplesRepublicofChina,NorthKorea,CubaandtheformerSovietUnion.MayDaycelebrationstypicallyfeatureelaboratepopularandmilitaryparadesinthesecountries.

IntheUnitedStatesandCanada,however,theofficialholidayforworkersisLaborDayinSeptember.ThisdaywaspromotedbytheCentralLaborUnionandtheKnightsofLabor,whoorganizedthefirstparadeinNewYorkCity.AftertheHaymarketMassacre,USPresidentGroverClevelandfearedthatcommemoratingLaborDayonMay1couldbecomeanopportunitytocommemoratetheriots.Thushemovedin1887tosupporttheLaborDaythattheKnightssupported.

In1955,theCatholicChurchdedicatedMay1toSaintJosephTheWorker.TheCatholicChurchconsidersSaintJosephthepatronsaintof(amongothers)workersandcraftsmen.
